Prosser pool opening delayed

PROSSER, Wash. -- The Prosser pool will not open today, the last day of school.

City workers making seasonal repairs to the 52-year-old pool for the summer have encountered more mechanical difficulties than anticipated.

They are shooting for Monday, with swim team practice in the morning and open swim at 1:30 p.m, said Cathleen Koch, city finance director.

Workers are filling the pool now. They will know in the next "day or two" if the repairs were successful, Koch said.

The pool typically opens on the last day of school.

Before the 2011 season, the city is planning to renovate the structure, which has leaky pipes, cracks in its deck and a bathhouse that does not meet disability standards.

Work could cost up to $2.5 million.
