YAKIMA, Wash. -- Got a green card but need help becoming an American citizen? Free help will be on hand Saturday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Yakima.
Members of the group OneAmerica are teaming up with immigration lawyers, paralegals and interpreters to provide free services to legal permanent residents who need help navigating the arduous naturalization process.
The event is co-sponsored by the Washington state chapter of the American Immigration Lawyers Association and is just one of many similar events
Saturday across the country.
The event will be from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, 212 N. Fourth St., Yakima. There is no cost to participants.
Organizers estimate there are 160,000 green card holders in Washington eligible to become citizens. The focus of Saturday's event is on the working poor who do not receive public benefits.
Similar events will also be held Saturday in Wenatchee, Vancouver and Tukwila. Participants can also get information about applying for naturalization loans with local credit unions in order to help them cover the application fee.
OneAmerica, formerly Hate Free Zone, describes itself as a nonprofit organization that "advances the fundamental principles of democracy and justice by building power within immigrant communities."
For more information on documents to bring to Saturday's event, visit www.wanewamericans.org/node/45.
