She’s a triple threat this year.
BreAnna Jones recently won the statewide Poetry Out Loud recitation contest for the third year in a row.
She recited “the mother” by Gwendolyn Brooks, “Ancestor” by Jimmy Santiago Baca, and “A Dream Within a Dream” by Edgar Allen Poe.
The West Valley High School senior won $200 cash as well as $500 for the purchase of poetry books for her school.
She won the local competition sponsored by Allied Arts on Jan. 31.
The statewide contest, sponsored by the Washington State Arts Commission and South Puget Sound Community College, took place March 20 in Olympia. Other sponsors are the National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation.
The national champion will win $20,000.
BreAnna will travel to Washington, D.C., next month to compete in the national competition for the third time.
Might just be a charm.
