YAKIMA, Wash. — A 21-year-old Yakima man was apparently shot Sunday evening by the occupant of a passing car because he was wearing a red shirt, city police said.

The man told officers he is a farm worker, and all indications were that he was an innocent victim of gang violence, said Sgt. Mike Henne of the Yakima Police Department.

The man was stopped at a stop sign in the area of Seventh and Adams streets about 7 p.m. when a van behind him pulled alongside as if to pass and then someone inside fired a single shot, Henne said.

The man drove himself to Yakima Valley Memorial Hospital, where he was being treated Sunday evening. The small-caliber bullet was lodged in his neck, but he was expected to fully recover, Henne said.
