SUNNYSIDE, Wash. -- A gang-related drive-by shooting outside Sunnyside sent a 16-year-old to the hospital with a gunshot wound to the back Wednesday night, Yakima sheriff’s deputies said.
Sgt. John Durand said the shooting occurred just after 6 p.m. outside a home in the 1600 block of Braden Road.
Witness statements indicated the teenager had been standing in the driveway when two cars, a white Nissan and a silver Volkswagen, pulled up and parked just east of the residence.
A Hispanic male wearing a dark sweatshirt then jumped from the Nissan and began firing at the house, striking the teenager once in the back, Durand said. The cars were last seen heading west on Braden.
The teenager, a self-described gang member, was taken to Sunnyside Community Hospital for treatment of nonlife-threatening wounds.
Durand said neither the wounded teen nor other witnesses were able to provide information about the identity of the attackers.
