Fire averted when resident smells smoke

Yakima Herald-Republic

YAKIMA, Wash. -- The telltale smell of smoke saved a house from burning down today in southeast Yakima.

A rescue call in the 1500 block of South 16th Street was launched at 12:45 p.m. when the occupant of the house smelled smoke and then saw smoke coming from the attic.

Yakima Fire Department Battalion Chief Mitch Cole said firefighters found charring around a junction box in the attic, strongly suggesting the problem was electrical in nature.

Cole said the smoke was confined to the attic and there was no damage to the living quarters of the home.

No injuries were reported. Firefighters cleared the scene within the hour.
