Fundraiser will help 'Mr. G'

Yakima Herald-Republic

El Porton is hosting a fundraiser for a former McClure Elementary School teacher in need of a bone marrow transplant.

David Gonzalez, commonly called "Mr. G" by students, was diagnosed with leukemia last fall. Due to his illness, he resigned in December. The longtime teacher is now awaiting a transplant at the Seattle Cancer Alliance.

Gonzalez joined the Yakima School District in 1985. Since then, he's worked at Jefferson, Martin Luther King Jr. and McClure elementary schools.

The fundraiser is being organized by his former colleagues at McClure. And two local El Porton restaurants -- 420 S. 48th Ave. in Yakima and 2512 Main St. in Union Gap -- are hosting the event.

Supporters are invited to stop by either restaurant for dinner from 5 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, and a portion of the sales will be donated to a fund for his care.

Donations may also be made at any Key Bank branch in his name.

For more information, call Janie Kranz at McClure Elementary School at 509-573-1300.
