YAKIMA -- A new group for Filipino women will hold its first meet-and-greet on Sunday at the Yakima Area Arboretum.

The Filipino-American Women's Organization of the Yakima Valley seeks to empower women and provide social services and information to Filipino senior citizens, said Emma Ygona-Parrish, the group's co-president.

"We are really looking forward to meeting everyone in the Valley," said Ygona-Parrish, who left the island of Cebu in the Philippines in 1982. "And so many of us work in social services. We have lots of Filipino nurses and doctors.

"Maybe we can do some service to those people who came before us, the farm workers who are getting old."

Sunday's event is from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.
