Yakima police make arrest in weekend shooting

Yakima Herald-Republic

YAKIMA, Wash. — Three days after a man was fatally shot while riding in his nephew’s car, authorities have arrested the person they believe pulled the trigger.

Yakima police arrested the 24-year-old Yakima man at 4 p.m. today at a duplex at South Sixth and West Logan avenues, near Hoover Elementary School.

He is the suspect in Saturday’s fatal shooting of David R. Duarte, 40, of Yakima, said Lt. Mike Merryman.

“It went off without a hitch,” said Merryman, as SWAT officers were clearing the scene this afternoon. “We were sitting on this for a while. We wanted to wait until school got out and there weren’t any kids in the street.”

Shortly before midnight Saturday, Duarte was riding in his 16-year-old nephew’s car near 16th and Washington avenues when someone in another vehicle began shooting at them.

Authorities say his nephew is a gang member, but do not believe Duarte was involved in gangs.
