Hoping to capitalize on the burgeoning conservative grass-roots movement, Mary Ruth Edwards announced Monday that she would run for Doc Hastings' seat in the U.S. House.

Edwards, a 49-year-old Prosser elementary school teacher, will run as a Constitution Party candidate. She announced her candidacy with a news release, joining a race that includes Democrat Jay Clough, who announced in November that he was running.

Hastings has not announced plans for a campaign but is the Republican Party's presumptive candidate in the 4th Congressional District, which he has represented since winning election in 1994.

Edwards is a former Marine and a single mother of two, who advises the drama department at Prosser High School along with her job teaching at Whitstran Elementary School. In 2009 she founded a local group within the 912 Project -- the grass-roots movement led by conservative commentator Glenn Beck. She is running on a platform of state sovereignty and strict constitutionalism.

"Our constitution has been virtually shredded," she said by phone Monday. "In the last 100 years, our Constitution has been under attack."

Edwards is concerned with the federal government's assumption of duties not expressly bestowed upon it by the Constitution. As a teacher, she's been particularly frustrated by federal
education policy.

"Mary Ruth will work to repeal all federal legislation regarding education," her campaign Web site says.

She's also big on gun rights.

"She stands against all laws which would require the registration of guns or ammunition," the Web site says.

Hastings has never come close to losing the U.S. House seat he took from Democrat Jay Inslee in 1994. He has garnered at least 60 percent of the vote in every election since 1998, including in 2008 when he beat Democrat George Fearing, 63 percent to 37 percent. Congressional Quarterly, which keeps tabs on elections nationwide, lists his 4th District seat as "safe Republican."

Edwards, who has never held elected office, said she chose to go after the federal seat rather than a local elected office after praying for guidance on the matter.

"If I'm going to do anything, I'm going to do it big," she said.

This is a really stupid move because third parties never win. She should challenge Doc in the primary instead of splitting the conservative vote in the general election and increasing the chances that a socialist liberal will win. Fortunately, Doc will still win despite losing a few votes to this nobody.

rjames,
You are absolutely right! Someone should try to talk sense into this person. If she doesn't like the job that Hastings is doing then challenge him in the primary, don't dillute the conservative vote and give the left wing progressives a chance at taking the seat.

Ross Perot - lost, Green Party in 2000 - lost, Ron Paul 2008 - lost
Third Parties don't have the clout. Run against him in the primary. This only makes Doc look middle of the road between a democrat and someone more far right than a Republican.

If Ms. Edwards was serious she would run as Republican. It would nice to have some alternative Republicans to choose from for Congress but no way will I support a third party candidate. This is one thing Michele Strobel understands in her campaign against Norm Johnson - running as a Republican is the best way to defeat an incumbent in Central Washington. That's exactly what Curtis King did when he beat Jim Clements.

Americans need a third party. Republicans have lost their way. No longer are Republicans for a smaller, limited Federal Government. When in power, they have done nothing but increase the size and spending of the Federal Government.

Obviously Doc needs to be replaced. He is a strict neo-conservative that votes based on party lines.

(Ron Paul in 2008 ran as a Republican)

"I thought that "progressive" meant something nice"

Thanks to Obama and the Dems controlling the entire government, we get to see that "progressive" means high taxes, high unemployment, big government, and socialized health care.

1% higher than the clinton days (which created a huge surplus)...

Now, you can't blame socialized healthcare on Obama, since he didn't start medicare.

and if you seriously blame the high unemployment on him...
then I'm just wasting my time with you since you know nothing about economics... infact the only "big government" thing he did was attempt to stop a potential economic collapse... infact the first bailouts were done by the previous Republican president.

Then again, you're usually not well informed about issues so its no surprise.

People are really getting sick and tired of politicians of both parties not listening to what we want. Maybe it is time for a third party candidate. Doc plays both ends against the middle; he will not make a stand for fear of losing the Mexican and farm owners vote, both being a vote for cheap labor that we pay for in subsidies to education, medication, and incarceration of those here illegally that are bleeding our country dry and jeopardizing our children's future. Consider the overcrowded class rooms and cuts of 40% and more to school programs. Legal immigration weeds out those people who would be a detriment to our society and we all welcome immigrants. We do NOT need those here illegally as Patty Murray says. They are causing havoc in our lives in crime and overcrowding which will only continue to get worse if we do not get E-Verify on the ballet in November through petition I-1056. You can find the petition at www.respectwashington.us. I for one will vote for Ms Edwards. Since I am a 65 year old cancer survivor lifelong Democrat grandma of nine, that should tell you just how fed up people are with the progressive liars (Cantwell, Murray, Obama, Pelosi, and Reid) and the corporate cronies Doc and the Repubs, both parties who put their party agenda above what is good for the nation. VOTE OUT INCUMBENTS!

Let us not forget Mexican is a NATIONALITY, NOT a race; a nationality that is openly loyal to their mother country of Mexico. When one considers our military is just over a million strong and we have allowed a nationalistic alien force within our borders to grow in size to 20-38 million, even subtracting women and children still is a frightening scenario. The border drug wars have now infiltrated inland to every part of our country; Bush may have allowed the biggest influx of illegal Mexicans trying to garner their vote, but the escalation in violent crime has exploded under Obama. Go to www.usborderpatrol.com and see for yourself what we are exposing our children to. It will scare your pants off. Then work to pass E-Verify in Washington State since Murray, Cantwell, Doc and Gregoire refuse to protect you.
