Doll Show and Sale today at Salvation Army building

People will be all dolled up at The Salvation Army today during the 29th annual Doll Show and Sale.

The event runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at The Salvation Army building, 310 N. 16th Ave. Sponsored by the Friendship Doll Club, proceeds benefit Salvation Army youth programs.

A $3 donation will be taken at the door, with a $5 lunch served from noon to 1 p.m. Information: 509-453-3139.

 

Wesley Methodist to host all-church birthday party

Wesley United Methodist Church will host its annual all-church birthday party following the 9 a.m. worship service Sunday.

A table will be set up for each month of the year, with participants joining fellow birthday celebrants for fun and cake.

The church is continuing its Lenten Soup Supper and Study Session every Wednesday through March 31. Sessions run 6-7:30 p.m., with two separate groups offered: "Who Do You Say I Am?" by Cynthia Hawkins, led by Don Reinmuth, and "The Awkward Season Prayers for Lent," by Pamela Hawkins, led by Amy Miller.

Nita Reinmuth will lead a Lenten study group for children while their parents are participating in the adult sessions.

Classical organ concert scheduled for Friday

A variety of classical music will highlight a Friday concert sponsored by Yakima Valley Chapter of the American Guild of Organists.

University of Houston organist Robert Bates will perform, beginning at 7:30 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church, 9 S. Eighth Ave.

Bates, who has a Ph.D. in musicology from Stanford University, has won prizes for his organ performances nationally and internationally.

'Secrets of Jonathan Sperry' now showing

"The Secrets of Jonathan Sperry," a new Christian movie, will be shown four times daily, today through Thursday, at Yakima Cinema, 1305 N. 16th Ave. Show times each day are 12:35, 3:35, 6:30 and 8:45 p.m.

The movie, starring Gavin MacLeod, is set in 1970 and shows Sperry teaching three 12-year-old boys basic biblical principles, including the importance of studying God's Word, sharing the Gospel with others and forgiveness.

The family-friendly, Christian movie is sponsored by Highland Community Church and other area churches. Regular movie ticket prices apply. Information: 509-307-5521.

 

Annual crab feed planned Friday at Holy Family

Holy Family Youth Ministry is hosting its annual crab feed 6-8 p.m. Friday, in Father Murtagh Gathering Hall at Holy Family Catholic Church, 5315 Tieton Drive. The all-you-can-eat feed includes crab, pasta, coleslaw, bread and non-alcoholic beverages.

Tickets, which must be purchased in advance, are available after all weekend Masses, in the parish office and in the religious education and youth ministry offices. Prices are $30 for ages 15-59, $25 for ages 7-14 and over 60. All proceeds will go toward those attending World Youth Day in August 2011. Information: 509-965-3471.

 

Missionaries from Selah to lead worship in Haiti

Two missionaries from Peace Lutheran Church in Selah will conduct a 10-day Bible school at an orphanage in Quanaminthe, Haiti, in July. Yvonne and Joanne Griesse, the wife and daughter, respectively, of the Rev. Mark Griesse of Peace Lutheran, are collecting school and first aid supplies, clothing, shoes and food for the Haitian children. The church is also offering Lenten worship services at 6:45 p.m. each Wednesday during Lent through March 24. A soup and sandwich supper at 6 p.m. will precede the worship services. Information: 509-697-4353 weekdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

 

Bethel Church service offers 'Salute to Black Men'

Bethel AME Church and Mount Hope Baptist Church present "A Salute to Black Men," a worship service Sunday, celebrating black history. The 3 p.m. service at Bethel, 515 S. 'Fish Frydays' scheduled at St. Joseph Marquette

St. Joseph Marquette Catholic School will hold "Fish Frydays" during Lent (except on Good Friday). The dates are: March 5, 12, 19 and 26.

The cost is $8 for fish, fries and coleslaw, a beer or pop. Kids under 6 are free. There will also be a charge of $2 for additional beer and $1 for additional pop. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. Tickets will be sold at the door.

Financial Peace University classes planned this spring

West Side Baptist Church is offering Dave Ramsey's Financial Peace University class from 6:45 to 8:15 p.m. each Wednesday beginning March 3 and running through May 26.

The classes teach principles of debt-free living and are open to everyone. A fee of $100 per family applies and includes all materials, plus lifetime membership to FPU.

Lenten lunches in Sunnyside

The women of Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Sunnyside are offering Lenten soup lunches each Wednesday from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. through March 24.

The cost is $7 and includes soup, pie and a beverage. There will also be takeout delivery within a three-mile radius of the church for five or more orders.

The menu is:

March 3 -- Beef barley

March 10 -- Potato soup

March 17 -- Split pea and ham

March 24 -- Chicken noodle
