MABTON, Wash. -- Three Mabton greenhouse workers settled their labor suit with Northwest Horticulture Inc. last month, each being awarded
$15,000 in the deal.

The former Northwest Horticulture employees -- Amelia Guizar, Virginia Ruelas and Maria Socorro Reyna -- had argued in their federal suit that the company had cut their pay and then fired them for protesting. The suit also claimed the company refused to rehire them.

Northwest Horticulture general manager Bruce Gibson declined to comment on the matter Thursday.

The settlement was announced this week in a news release from Columbia Legal Services, which represented Ruelas. The Northwest Justice Project represented the other two plaintiffs. Both organizations provide legal services for low-income people and families.

The plaintiffs see the settlement as a clear victory, according to the press release.

"I want others to know that there is something that you can do if you face retaliation," Reyna said in the release. "There are people who can help you when the law is violated."

The three women worked harvesting nursery stock in the Mount Vernon-based company's Mabton greenhouses. Their suit alleged violations of the Migrant and Seasonal Agricultural Workers Protection Act. It was settled Jan. 25.
