SUNNYSIDE -- A Prosser woman and her passenger were hospitalized Thursday morning after she ran a stop sign and was struck by a semi-truck about 2 miles north of Sunnyside, authorities said.
Petra Mendoza-Ortega, 33, was driving a 1997 Pontiac van east on Edison Avenue about 5:30 a.m. when she failed to stop for a stop sign at the State Route 241, according to a Washington State Patrol news release.
A semi-truck on southbound SR-241 crashed into the van, but its driver, 51-year-old Bryan S. Unruh of Moses Lake, was not injured.
Mendoza-Ortega and her passenger, Irene Mendoza-Zenon, 52, of Prosser, were taken to Sunnyside Community Hospital with undisclosed injuries. Hospital officials could not immediately confirm their conditions Thursday afternoon.
Both women were wearing seat belts and authorities do not believe alcohol or drugs were factors in the collision.
Mendoza-Ortega faces a traffic citation for failing to stop at a stop sign, according to the State Patrol.
