YAKIMA, Wash. -- A Yakima woman was convicted Wednesday of second-degree criminal mistreatment for not seeking timely dental care for her 10-year-old son.

Kathren Ann Carter's jury trial was held in Yakima County Superior Court, where the felony case was filed in 2008.

In charging documents, a doctor had compared the pain of the dental abscesses in Carter's son to "being shot with a nail gun."

Abscesses are severe infections at the root of teeth, usually caused by severe decay.

Several of the developmentally disabled boy's adult teeth had to be removed, and a doctor said the condition could have been life-threatening if allowed to continue without treatment.

Carter's defense attorney contended she was unaware of the extent of the problem and that she lacked money for expenses, such as transporting the child to appointments. Financial hardship is a permitted defense for the crime under state law.

Sentencing is scheduled set for March 1.
