YAKIMA, Wash. -- A couple items of note this afternoon for you On Blog readers -- both having to do with The Seasons Performance Hall.
First, I’d like to wholeheartedly recommend Sachal Vasandani’s performance there on Saturday. I’ve been listening to this guy’s songs the past few days, and I can’t say I’ve heard anything quite like him before.
Some have called him the male Norah Jones; others have compared him to Sinatra. Neither comparison makes sense to me, but I can see how critics grasping for some point of reference have settled for those. Vasandani’s singing has more depth than Jones, in my humble opinion. And it’s a lot more subtle than Ol' Blue Eyes, although it also lacks some of his panache. That’s not such a harsh criticism, though, considering that nobody is really in Frank’s league panache-wise.
And bonus points to Vasandani for being nothing short of a swell guy when I interviewed him this morning by phone. Watch for the results of that interview in Friday’s On Magazine. And check out a clip of Vasandani below.
The other Seasons news today is the venue’s announcement of an upcoming folk series, starting Feb. 19 with The Kosher Red Hots. If you’re into the whole neo-klezmer revival thing these guys are a must-see. The series continues through May with shows from Tingstad & Rumbel, Retta Christie and Deadwood Revival.
Watch future editions of On Magazine for more on those shows.
