YAKIMA, Wash. -- Investigators say alcohol may have been responsible for a 40-year-old Yakima man who drove his 2003 BMW X5 into oncoming traffic Wednesday evening.
Yakima police Sgt. Gary Jones said Jose Esparza was speeding west on West Lincoln Avenue about 6:20 p.m. when he crossed the double yellow center line near Custer Avenue.
His car crashed into a GMC Envoy driven by 63-year-old Kenneth Donahoo of Yakima, who tried to steer to the curb line, Jones wrote in a news release.
The crash pushed both vehicles into an adjacent driveway. Both drivers and a total of five passengers, between the ages of 11 and 72, were injured, Jones wrote.
None of the injuries are believed to be life-threatening and both drivers were treated and released from Yakima Valley Memorial Hospital, authorities said. Police did not say whether any of the passengers were still hospitalized Thursday.
Esparza was not wearing his seat belt, Jones said.
The accident caused a two-hour partial road closure Wednesday evening, and traffic investigators closed the road again Thursday for approximately 90 minutes, Jones said. Police expect to forward the results of the investigation to the Yakima County Prosecutor's Office.
