YAKIMA, Wash. -- Yakima police say a Yakima Avenue barista served up a little more than coffee this week.
She and her boss were charged with indecent exposure Friday, marking the latest in Yakima's controversy over espresso stands featuring baristas wearing skimpy clothing.
Dream Girls Espresso barista Alyssa Hernandez, 21, and owner Cheryl Clark pleaded not guilty in Yakima Municipal Court.
Yakima police allege Hernandez on Wednesday wore a G-string to work that allowed her buttocks to be seen by the public at the stand on Yakima Avenue near the railroad tracks, said Cynthia Martinez, Yakima's assistant prosecuting attorney.
The misdemeanor carries a maximum penalty of a $1,000 fine and 90 days in jail. Their next court appearance will be in late February.
Both women declined to comment Friday evening.
Yakima city officials have for more than a year wrung their hands about so-called sexpresso stands, latte joints in which women in lingerie, bikinis or other saucy attire attract as much attention as the coffee. Yakima has three while Union Gap has one.
"We receive complaints on a regular basis," Martinez said.
Meanwhile, former Mayor Dave Edler has often spoken out against them. City Council briefly discussed regulating them as adult businesses but settled for changes in the city's indecent exposure laws that made thong underwear and see-through clothing illegal.
The city ordinance also holds owners and managers responsible for allowing the attire, Martinez said.
Friday's charge was the first for an employee of one of the coffee shops, but Yakima police have written tickets to men caught masturbating in the parking lot near some of the businesses, Martinez said.
Martinez did not know how many times men have been ticketed, but that it has been more than once.
The issue isn't limited to Yakima. Baristas in Everett have been charged with prostitution.
Yakima police Chief Granato shrugged off any political ramifications of Friday's charge.
"We're not looking for attention, we're enforcing the law," he said.
Martinez said a uniformed police officer issued the citation Wednesday after the department received a complaint.
Martinez and Granato said all such businesses have been fairly warned about the city's laws. They received letters from the department and the prosecutor reminding them in mid-December after plainclothes officers found several exposure violations at the city's coffee stands.
Martinez said she hopes the charges make the other shops shape up, too.
"I'm hoping that the other businesses take note and follow the law," she said.

maybe she was trying to stay cool?
"Yakima police allege Hernandez on Wednesday wore a G-string to work that allowed her buttocks to be seen by the public"
heehee, Ross Courtney said "buttocks".
"Friday's charge was the first for an employee of one of the coffee shops, but Yakima police have written tickets to men caught masturbating in the parking lot near some of the businesses, Martinez said.
Martinez did not know how many times men have been ticketed, but that it has been more than once."
Pretty disgusting...
Its to bad that this country of ours is so up tight about the human body. They will condone illegal immergation and other acts that drag our country down. But showing the Human Body is Imorale

Buttocks...indecent...masturbating...who'd have that the Herald would get me so hot?
Report ViolationSeems like seem like the perfect time for the baristas to sue the city of Yakima and they will win. The city council was warned that it was unconstitutional but some church leaders had an issue with those sinners. Maybe if they had underage boys working there they would of been cool with it.
Report ViolationYakipaparazzi, why do you think you have the right to spread unsubstantiated rumors about Cheryl Clark on this blog? I think she has the right to sue you for slander. "Buttocks" are only indecent in Yakima. All other parts of the civilized world realize that EVERYONE has buttocks. Magazines are full of exposed buttocks. It's all in the eye of the beholder. If you shop at certain stores in Yakima you can see buttocks everytime someone bends over and, believe me, they are not sexy!!!!

Mocha Tree (thanks for nameing the buisness) and G-strings? I know where I'm getting my coffee today!
Report Violation(This comment has been removed by a Yakima Herald-Republic moderator)
...and what's with the men masturbating in the parking lot? I thought only gay men were into sex in public places - or at least, that's been the lie perpetuated against gay men for decades.
Report ViolationAs fredo pointed out, even bad publicity is good publicity.
I think the real issue at hand here is not whether these businesses are seedy or breaking the law, but when it became illegal to wear a G-string. I say we put a vote up on that one immediately! :P
In all seriousness though, not to step on the toes of any Christians, but this seems like an issue that only a few organizations are going to be concerned about "skimpy" attire.
yakipaprazzi:
You have completely changed my opinion and view on Cheryl Clark, and will prevent her from ever conducting successful business with me.
That being said, I hope she sues you for slander.

Dang..Will someone PLEASE come and arrest my neighbor! He left his window open last week and I was witness to the MOST disturbing butt crack EVER!
I wonder if the coffee shop was anywhere other than the "heart" of Yakima if it would even be an issue??? Seriously are we THAT bored for crimes?? I think not...
And if guys ARE marturbating in the parking lot..There are some seriously deranged men on the streets!
Wow a g string! As I am reading this story there is an advertisment on the YHR website for a weightloss program. Of course, the before and after pic has the woman in a g string. YPD please investigate and arrest the YHR web master. Oh and I also want to make a report now and ask that the city make sure the young people at our public pools do not show there buttocks this summer. Swimming suits must cover these disgusting parts to the knees. OK now that we are on track, lets work something out that keeps womens face covered. We could probably hire some ex-Taliban as consultants.
If you want coffee without a show, go to Starbucks. If you are easily offended dont go to adult bookstores to buy a soda.
This is so atypical of Granato. He just makes the bust now because of pressure, but he's known about it forever. The p_rnography shop being in full view is too suspicious. Who owns that building anyway, probably his masters, the "goody-goody witchy gals".
Report Violation(This comment has been removed by a Yakima Herald-Republic moderator)
Wow, It's nice to see that YPD is making every effort to keep the city of Yakima safe by sending plain clothed officers to the espresso stands to see if the girls are following the dress coed laws!! I think they need to worry more about the city's gang problem more than what the girls are wearing at the stands!! Hmmm I wonder if they sent male police officers to "check them out" cause you know that's exactly what they were doing! LOL.... Anyway, if the city was going to make a big deal about these types of businesses then they should have thought twice about allowing them into Yakima!! I mean what exactly did they think would happen!? I use to work for Cheryl at the Mocha Tree in Gleed and she was an awesome employer!!It doesn't matter what girls wear there are men & women that are freaks and will do some freaky crap to people that work at espresso stands!! Good luck Cheryl & Alyssa I hope the charges get dropped!!
Report ViolationThe police should do sweeps of KMART, Fred Meyer etc... and confiscate any thong underwear they find for sale. It would be better to nip such criminal activity in the bud than to allow perfectly innocent women to be drawn into a life of criminal underwear wearing behavior.
Report Violationslow news day? Or the cops mustve been far behind their quota!
In either case, if this upsets people, I suggest they not watch MTV or BET during spring break.
(This comment has been removed by a Yakima Herald-Republic moderator)
This is the absolute stupidest thing ever. When the laws force everyone to act the same, how will decent men know which girls are sleezy? When men whack off in private rather than in public, how will we know which ones are creeps? I say, let everyone show exactly how trashy they are so that decent people can stay away.
Report ViolationHow about you worry about the gangs and less about the coffee shop!
Report ViolationNOTE TO YHR MODERATOR:
When you delete a letter with patently offensive/slanderous comments, you should delete the letters quoting it as well. I had no idea that Chery is a (fill in the blank) until I read the comments about the comment. This is wrong!
PS: Faulty logic alert!!
AS for the posts about the police going after gangsters etc.. instead of coffee girls, this is a false choice. The argument assumes that police can either prosecute murderers or coffee girls, but not both. It is, of course, entirely possible for them to do both, without the prosecution of either affecting the quality of their police work on both.
The real argument should be about the laws themselves, not the enforcement.
Why the YHR even took the time to write this article in the first place is beyond me. This isn't newsworthy on any level. The police issued a citation on a business for violation of a city ordinance. Isn't that what they are suppose to do? Does the YHR post articles every time an ordinance citation is written for other business owners, or when YPD tickets a guy for indecent exposure, urinating in the street, etc? The only up-side to writing this article is being able to read the after comments to get a feel of where the folks thinking is on this subject. Baristas wearing skimpy clothing should be low on Yakimas list of priorities for cleaning up Yakima. Gangs, thugs and thieves need to come first.
There's a reason why I've nicknamed my neighbor "Buttcrack." I wish someone would stop by and arrest him whenever he's working on his truck.
Truly disgusting, all 350 pounds of it.
overfifty
It's important for us to know if they're trying to turn Yakima into some sort of sex shop. Already there's a daycare downtown that drug addict sex offenders can go to. The Sheriff's maps of level three offenders all over downtown are completely inaccurate. I do not think you can be serving food in Yakima with nudity. Maybe cocktails, but food service is another ball game.. They keep stretching the law and stretching it. All the youth centers are not actually legal. What is next? I think Granato and Rosenow would like us to be the next Amsterdam, and Micah Cawley better stop them. I don't have much faith Coffee will, but I don't know.
These businesses are making money the same way adult businesses are making money. The goal is to "turn on" degenerate men who have NO sexual reality so they have to live through fantasy. Hence, the dudes in the parking lots.
However, the coffee houses are unregulated. I agree that sending YPD in plain clothes is a waste of time. ALL THEY NEED TO DO IS REGULATE THESE PLACES UNDER THE ADULT BUSINESS REGULATIONS.
Also, they need to add some stipulations to our adult business ordinance. It is VERY weak in comparison to MANY very progressive communities.
Now to the comments about how you can see this at any swimming pool, beach, etc: Seriously?! Please let me and the good people of Yakima CHOOSE which pool, beach and G-String we see. Sexual titillation belongs in people's private lives, not on the streets in the public eye. These businesses are sickening. That said, people have a right to quite a bit of sickening behavior in our FREE country. Keep it behind closed doors, PLEASE!!!
GUYS: My heart goes out to these young girls. They are someone's daughter, granddaughter, and future wife. Stop treating them as objects for your personal pleasure. They are human beings with value and worth. The first/next time you hold your own baby daughter or grand daughter in your arms consider how you would feel if in 16 years some dude getting turned on by looking at her like a piece of meat.
LADIES: respect yourselves, your bodies and your value and save your beauty for your husband. Please don't jeopardize your chances of getting respectable jobs due to "adult entertainment" on your resumes. Someday you will want to be teachers, doctors, lawyers and you will look back on your "criminal record" of indecent exposure and regret this. Are the tips you get now really worth it? Think BIGGER! Think past this silly profession and move on already!!!
its funny with all the crime, drugs, immigration, they find the time to go arrest a hot thong chic thats doing her job. They might sell crappy coffee but come on now, we know the county is hurting for money but @#$% it has to get this bad to where you arrest someone doing her job..
WhatThe - they choose to work there, no one twisted there arms and told them to work there, most of them are trying to put themselves through college, if we had a strip club in yak, thats where most of these girls would be instead of the coffee shops. So think about it, before you spit on them for them doing there job!
county guy
There is something to beiing clean cut your know, like wives and children. Those don't want that thrown in their face. It's the pervs that like to do that. Probably they let little kids buy cookies there. They probably have a sign that says coffee and nothing about nudity and probablly lots of big cookies out front to lure the kids, who knows. Why can't their sign say something. I think I'd puke if I pulled up for a great cop of coffee and got a gander at a slimey thong.
~Sighs~ I wish there were some guys working in these coffee stands. I would love to see a dude try to pole dance at the Deja Brew located a FEW BLOCKS from the Ridgeview Elementary school where they say the words..pole dance and Irish ticklers in one sentence..LOL.. I do not care w about these stands other than 2 things, 1. They should NOT be located so close to schools and 2. They are sexist against men..I hear of only women working in them and no men..why is that? The city has bigger issues other than these stands...gangs and murders should be above this. Its a womans choice if she so decides to knock her self esteem down, not the citys place nor the publics to babysit them. Butt out..(no pun intended LOL keep your cheeks covered ladies and gentleman keeps your hands on the steering wheel and not in your lap).
Report Violationcounty guy1
So today it is okay to serve coffee, nearly naked, because the county is hurting for money. What will be okay tomorrow? It is a slippery slope.
The desensitization of a society, especially during financial crisis, can lead to catastrophic mistakes. Read your history. Anytime people begin to make excuses for bad behavior because we "need to" for money, it leads to very negative outcomes. (Remember, Hitler blamed the Jews for his people's financial woes and convinced an entire country to annihilate a precious people who were herded like animals to their deaths. Allowing people to be seen as objects leads to human trafficking, slavery and death)
Also, there wasn't an ounce of spit on anyone in my earlier comment, other than on the degenerate men who objectify women as if they have less value than animals.
Sweety, you need to read more carefully. I was being supportive of these women and trying to inspire them to think past their tip money to the future when they will most likely regret the "work" they are doing today for a few bucks. I realize no one twists their arms. Why don't you try to consider these women as human beings.
And by the way, you spelled "there" wrong. It is spelled t-h-e-i-r. If you're going to make public comments, try spell-check. You lose credibility with poor spelling.

I'm all for these girls dressing how they want to attract customers- they look cute. (And by the way, I'm not a guy and I'm not gay.) I say "if you got, flaunt it". (But g-strings are a bit much.) Honestly, I think the ones making a big stink over this are the ones who can't dress like that and desperately want to. If you don't want to see "scantilly-clad women" serving coffee, then don't go to those coffee stands. You know which ones allow that type of dress. It's like going to a night club and complaining that the music is too loud. Let go of this RIDICULOUS issue and focus more on why there's so many kids dying over a stupid color.
Report Violationoh please Peanut
Name one town that does this--"you know which ones"--no we don't know which ones and when you're buying food, most don't want it combined with buttocks.
But now we do know this one--it's the one one half block from the dirty book store. What do you wanna bet there's freaks running between the two locations.
Could we do a survey--is this girls mother an illegal alien? Are they being groomed for this kind of work?
Word will get out on this kind of thing-and I think the ones saying this is OK are somehow involved with the sex trade in Yakima. I'm sorry, but I don't think a normal person expects to pull up to a coffee shack and get a gander at a rear end. Name one other town. This is Granato behind this. He didn't want to do this bust, you can bet on it.
Normal people, don't be fooled by some of these comments--they're trying to soften us up for something even more disgusting.
whore (hôr, h?r)
n.

intr.v. whored, whor·ing, whores
1. To associate or have sexual relations with prostitutes or a prostitute.
2. To accept payment in exchange for sexual relations.
3. To compromise one's principles for personal gain.
Granato is playing this like a master. This is just to get it in the paper across the state that we have coffee shops around town where losers can get a peek. Watch, from there, there will be spotters in the lot, or the girl will give them a card where the fool can go to get even more action. Granato will then try to force his men and women to help with his sordid activity and there will be more lawsuits filed. That will also give him an excuse to further belittle and harrass them, and you the taxpayer will pay for it.
Report ViolationThe only people that are sticking up for these sexpresso stands are the men that go to them, the owners, and employees. keep that in mind, when you read these blogs. Everyone else has more class! Idiots!
A women who sells her body to a variety of creeps, low-lifes and degenerates is the definition of these sexpresso stand employee's and of the owners "prostitute" i feel that these parents have the right to speak about what is offensive to the public. Protecting our children should always come first. To those parents that disagree i will pray for you. If people like you really exist then i am praying for all of us.
Prostitution, is as a form of exploitation of women and male dominance over women, and as a practice which is the result of the existing patriarchal societal order. Prostitution has a very negative effect, both on the prostitutes themselves and on society as a whole, as it reinforces stereotypical views about women, who are seen as sex objects which can be used and abused by men.
THE VIDEO ON KNDO WASNT FULLY SHOWN. THE VIDEO ACTUALLY SHOWED MOULIN BREW EMPLOYEE DOING A FIVE DOLLAR HOLLAR. A SEX ACT FOR MONEY!
THE ALYSSA GAL WAS ACTUALLY CAUGHT EXPOSING HER PRIVATE TO AN UNDERCOVER. SHE SHOULD BE HAPPY THAT HE LESSENED THE CHARGED TO A G STRING VIOLATION.
I am more concerned about the safety of the young girls, especially those who work after dark. I would hope that parents or very large male friends look after their safety and pick them up. As cold as the weather has been, I would not like to be that lightly dressed. How about parkas or sweaters and leggings?
I know there's a freedom of the press issue, but I wish you hadn't published her name and picture and hope it does not make her a target. How about publishing the names and pictures of the men picked up for public indecency in the nearby parking lot?
WE ARE ALREADY PAYING FOR IT! YAKIMA IS NOW KNOWN THROUGHOUT THE COUNTRY AS A SEXPRESSO TOWN. THIS IS NOT WHAT WE WERE AS A COMMUNITY TRYING TO ACHIEVE. SO MUCH FOR CLEANING IT UP AND HELPING OUR ECONOMY.
LET'S GET RID OF THEM NOW! LET'S BE KNOWN FOR WHAT WE REALLY HAVE TO OFFER. WORK TOGETHER!
You've got to know what Granato's next plan is--and that is why all these comments are coming thru--the foolish man thinks he can run PR campaigns thru these blogs. The next thing will be, that the barista will hand the pervert a map where he can go to one of Yakima's illegal youth centers and have his pick of the kids. There is already many level 3 sex offenders living right around the centers, but you won't find it on Sheriff Irwin's maps. Yes - people- I'm familiar, shall I say, a little too familiar with the seediness of the rotund man we call our police chief. Inside him dwells a being that none of you have ever seen. We already have the illegal youth centers, they even get food money from the state-one guy running one, was recently under investigation for child abuse of an indecent nature. But you won't get that from Granato.
Do you really think that this is not making news all over the state or even the contry? Come on--it's unappetizing. It'd be like going to visit someone-and the @#$% fool strips and gets right in your face-ugh!! Is the barista mentlly ill? Do you really think we will not possibly be visited with angry, impotent men, that may commit violent sexual crimes in our county? If they're selling cookies and hot chocolate, shuoldn't they at least inform kids?
Don't worry, though folks, this is just these fools trying to get away with one last act of indecency before the Feds run them out. And I do not mean Barack Obama. If you read the article on Ice, you can tell there are a lot of people who do not want the status quo to end in Yakima. But, I think, must of us were thinking "Oh, God, when will it end?"
All lot of the illegals visiting us are convicted sexual offenders- so they will probably the first to go. After that, the illegal youth centers and Granato and Rosenow will be the next. Than probably these unappetizing cofee shops. This is probably going to kill business at the other ones, because most people won't want to take a chance of being flashed by what has to be some sort of pervert--I'm sorry but who equates hot beverage service with G-strings? Nobody but a nut. Any comments against this, and I'm sure you people will realise, are more than likely people in the sex trade--like the dirty book store half a block away.
Excuse me..What is a Five Dollar hollar?

Boy it really bugs you when people don't like all this flesh peddling going on, you're here, you're there with your silly disinformation. However, what seems to be shining through is that it really bugs you anybody calling it what it really is. You see, a nice, normal Yakima-with no more bare ass_d coffee servers, no more illegal youth centers, no more Sam Granato, and no more little brown kids running wild on the streets of Yakima till late at night is just really not the Yakima you want, is it?
Well, don't cry on my shoulder, I've heard enough. I think it's time you really set your mind to it and learned how to pick apples next year.

Change the law if you want but don't criticize the authorities for holding up the law as it now stands.
