YAKIMA, Wash. -- Late-afternoon traffic forced a fleeing driver to a stop on Thursday, police said.
The driver and three occupants jumped out of the white Infiniti on eastbound Washington Avenue toward 16th Avenue, but officers soon caught them in the area.
Other motorists had to drive around the car until a tow truck arrived to take it away. The roadway was clear by about 5 p.m.
The pursuit started about 4:20 p.m. when officers spotted a car that they thought contained a suspect wanted for probation violations and misdemeanor warrants, Sgt. Erik Hildebrand said. The driver fled when police tried to stop the car near 27th Avenue and Tieton Drive.
The pursuit reached top speeds around 65 mph, Hildebrand said.
After the driver stopped, two passengers ran into the nearby Ding Ho Chinese restaurant and tried to hide in the bathroom, he said. Officers found them there.
The driver and another suspect were caught elsewhere near the scene.
Officers said they also recovered a handgun that one of the occupants had tossed from the car.
The 46-year-old driver turned out not to be the warrant suspect, although he is related to that man, Hildebrand said.
