YAKIMA, Wash. — Yakima police have identified the driver and a second person struck in an accident that killed a
20-year-old pedestrian Tuesday evening.
The driver was 20-year-old Monica Barajas of Yakima, according to a news release by the Yakima police traffic unit.
Barajas was driving a Nissan Maxima westbound on Nob Hill Boulevard as the two women were crossing at 11th Avenue, an intersection that does not have a crossing signal or marked crosswalk.
A vehicle in the inside lane stopped for them. But The Maxima, in the outside lane, continued and struck both pedestrians, investigators said.
Brittny Kilpatrick of Yakima died of her injuries on Wednesday at Yakima Valley Memorial Hospital. Sarah Nelson, 22, also of Yakima, was treated for minor injuries and released.
Police are continuing to investigate. They have not decided whether to issue any tickets but said drugs or alcohol don’t appear to be a factor.
