Several Central Washington transportation projects would be funded under a congressional budget proposal that is expected to be sent shortly to President Barack Obama.
Sen. Patty Murray announced the funding in a news release issued Wednesday morning.
The biggest Yakima project is the creation of vehicle underpasses through downtown Yakima to prevent trains from blocking street traffic. About $1.9 million in federal dollars would go toward that construction.
Other projects include:
• $292,000 to upgrade a Yakima YWCA housing project for domestic-violence victims.
• $584,000 to construct a pedestrian overpass over Beaudry Road in East Valley to connect school campuses in the area. The overpass is intended to improve student safety and ease congestion.
• $1.9 million for safety improvements on Kittitas Highway, which runs between Kittitas and Ellensburg.
