SUNNYSIDE -- Sunnyside City Council members will get a new colleague a couple weeks early.
Mike Farmer will be sworn in as the newest Sunnyside City Council member for District 2, replacing Jesse Hernandez Jr., at the council's regular meeting Dec. 14.
Hernandez was appointed in March to replace Bruce Epps, but was defeated by Farmer in the Nov. 3 election. Epps' term would have ended Dec. 31.
However, by state law, appointed city council members are replaced by an elected candidate as soon as the election results are certified, which this year occurred on Nov. 24. Dec. 14 will be the first regular meeting.
In another Sunnyside City Council race, challenger Don Vlieger defeated incumbent Carol Stone by seven votes. Stone has requested and is paying for a recount since the statistical margin was not close enough to warrant an automatic recount. That recount will be held Monday.
In other Sunnyside council races, incumbent Theresa Hancock beat Jason Raines to retain her seat, while Nick Paulakis, appointed in June, ran unopposed to keep his seat. Hancock and Paulakis have already taken their oaths and do not need to be sworn in again, said City Clerk Deborah Estrada.
