YAKIMA, Wash. -- A Yakima man is in custody after he walked away from the scene of a Chelan County accident early Saturday in which a passenger was injured.

The Washington State Patrol said Joel Barajas, 32, was taken into custody a short distance away and is being held at the Chelan County jail.

According to an accident memorandum, Barajas was driving a 1991 Honda Accord north on U.S. Highway 97, 10 miles south of Dryden, when the vehicle ran off the roadway and landed nose-first in a creek.

Barajas was not injured in the 6 a.m. mishap.

A 26-year-old passenger, whose identity has not been fully determined, suffered neck, back and shoulder pain. The Yakima resident was taken to Central Washington Hospital in Wenatchee for treatment.

The memorandum said excessive speed was a factor in the mishap. Drugs or alcohol were not involved in the accident.
