YAKIMA, Wash. -- Love her or hate her -- there seems to be no third alternative -- Sarah Palin draws crowds.
Those looking to see the Republican former Alaskan governor and John McCain's 2008 running mate at her book signing in Richland on Sunday are advised to arrive early; only the first 1,000 in line will get wristbands guaranteeing Palin's signature.
"I expect a big line," said 18-year-old Diego Trejo of Grandview, who plans to make the trip. "There's some people who might be crazy enough to stay the night in their car."
It's hard to imagine thousands of starstruck fans lining up for hours to see John Edwards, Joe Lieberman or Jack Kemp, but Palin has drawn a fervent following the likes of which those other unsuccessful vice presidential candidates never did.
Trejo, who starts college in the spring and this year worked on Republican David Taylor's successful 15th District state House campaign, has been a Palin fan since she burst onto the national scene a little over a year ago.
He appreciates her strong conservative stance on social issues -- opposing gay marriage and abortion, particularly. But like many of Palin's fans, Trejo is also drawn to Palin's story, her rise from small-town mayor to national politician.
"It will be an amazing experience if I get to shake her hand and get a book signed," he said.
Christian Broadcasting of Yakima Vice President Skip Schoff plans to make the trip with Trejo and Marc and Michele Strobel. Marc Strobel is a pastor at Selah Covenant Church. His wife, Michele, owns a cosmetics company and is considering challenging state Rep. Norm Johnson, R-Yakima, in next year's election.
"We're trying to work out an interview (with Palin)," Schoff said.
Though he's attending on behalf of CBY television, Schoff and company are also unabashed fans of Palin.
"We're going to buy our books and get signatures," he said.
Another two-person Yakima County delegation also plans to make the trip to Richland; county Republican Party Vice Chairwoman Rita Hanses and party Secretary Laurel Young.
Like Trejo, Hanses said she appreciates Palin's social conservatism and ability to relate to small-town America.
"You have to identify your base and keep your base if you're ever going to be successful," Hanses said. "And she has that base."
She also has a certain something -- Hanses calls it her chemistry -- that just gets through to people. It's the quality that separates charismatic politicians like Palin and President Barack Obama from those who are considered staid like Sen. John Kerry and former Vice President Al Gore, Hanses said.
"She is a force," Hanses said.
Trejo put it another way: "She is a rock star."

As someone said on the last thread about Palin, yes, people are very scared of a Palin presidency. The USA re-elected Bush in 2004, so they are dumb enough to go "ohh, shiny!" and vote for Palin in 2012 if she runs.
We all know she threw in the towel and quit being governor of Alaska. She constantly runs to the safety of Fox News & company...people who won't ask her such tough "gotcha" questions as "What do you read?"
What is she going to do when a nation invades Hawaii? Quit? Go on Fox News and complain that our forefathers never intended for Hawaii to be part of the USA anyway, so the media is just being unfair to her. She acts like a little kid and runs for safety the moment she is out of her element. Do we really want this in a President?
She was a politician who became a celebrity. This is different from say, Ronald Reagan, who was a celebrity who became a politician.
Just being famous does not qualify her for the highest office in the land and I don't think there is anyone who will argue that it does.
However, she is a good stalking horse/straw-man/Trojan horse for the Republican Party. If everyone pays attention to her as if she were the front runner for the Republican nomination in 2012, it will draw heat away from the real, final candidate for months.
The downside to this intentional or accidental Republican "strategy" is that she might actually GET the nomination, at which point the Republicans can write off 2012, and probably 2016 and 2020 as well.
Easy guys, certain ignorant people might take your words as misogynistic undertones.
/end sarcasm
I really liked John McCain, he used to be my favorite politician before he completely went against his ideals to achieve a party nomination... and Palin was the pinnacle of his descension.
We have a radical socialist in the whitehouse who is destroying our economy, taking over private industries, spending money twice as fast as any president in history, and what are liberals worried about? Sarah Palin.
Sarah Palin's ideals are much closer to our founders' ideals, so most liberals who hate her also hate America.
Yeah, I think she ruined McCain's chances too. Old news, blah, blah, blah...yawn.

Report ViolationSjuan2: I thought you said just the other day that Barack was not qualified to be president since he wasn't born in the US? Why are you worrying about the economy that he inherited from Bush then if he is no qualified to be president?
Also, if anything the last eight years taught us is that you hate America if you say bad things about the president, so I guess you hate America then too.
johnny,
I've never made any comments about where Barack was born, so you're a liar. Obama's failing presidency is proof that he was unqualified to be President. He is incompetent and in over his head.
Obama inherited a recession and he has managed to make it much worse. Obama predicted his trillion dollar stimulus package would hold unemployment under 8% and he predicted that without the stimulus package unemployment would reach 9%. It is now 10.2% and rising. Obama's policies have not only failed to improve the economy, they have made things worse. A year into his presidency, he has no major accomplishments and is still whining about inheriting Bush's problems.
Sarah Palin would be a much better president than the chump we're stuck with now.
If you do not leave for the book signing by 5 PM today, you may not get in.
there is usually a limit of the first 500 people. Fort Bragg had 4000 show up.
The trouble that the left is having is simple. They are so busy falling for the trap Sarah has set that they are losing ground. They are too busy attacking Sarah and are not defending Mr. Obama's back.
The polling this week showed that Mr. Obama and Sarah are neck and neck.
Mr. Obama's 15 minutes of fame is disappearing faster than Tiger Wood's marriage.
You got that right Frances!!
LOVE her!! She's like a breath of FRESH COOL AIR!
I wonder how her day went with Aunt Katie! I'd love to see pictures! And how awesome that she had her whole family out there running with her! Such support! WE see NONE of that with Obama. No one who KNOWS him from the past will stand UP for him now. Either they are dead or NOT talking! Hmm wonder why that is? doh!
@sjuan2: yup you are correct, I stand corrected, it was Datruef that I was thinking of. I get you two confused!

Hmm lets see...
Obama stimulus: $787 billion stimulus 700 billion bailouts (includes housing and car)
Bush bailouts: $153 billion $800 billion 500 billion in Afgahnistan and Iraq per year for nearly a decade, on top of cutting taxes.
Obama: Trying to help the uninsured and spending on Americans.
Bush: Spending on attacking other countries, catering the rich.
So can someone please, please tell me where the teabaggers were for the last decade?
iether way, anyone that actually likes Palin clearly lacks any insight in politics. She's stealing un needed attention from real intelligent and qualified women like Nancy Pelosi and Hillary Clinton look bad, and its a shame... a @#$% big shame.
Sarah Palin is nothing but a joke, hence her ascent to fame via comedy central and Saturday night live jokes...
Palin quits before finishing the 5K Turkey Trot race.
http://thinkprogress.org/2009/11/28/palin-turkey-trot-quit/
Palin couldn't even keep her house a home; with her teenage daughter getting pregnant...she didn't even know she was sexually active!
How would she be able to run the United States of America if she couldn't run her own house?
It's fine with me if all of you left-leaning folks want to be liberal. Just be liberal with your own stuff and stay the He** out of the hard-working souls pockets. All you ever seem to do is whine....whine....whine. Let's see just how much whining you'll be doing after another year under "Obama care".
Report Violation^^ I'm pretty sure you'll gladly accept social security and medicare benefits... public roads... public schools... the armed forces... all of those are classic all are classic examples of "obamacare" ie, socialism.
Anywho, you're right, 50 million with insurance, so I'm pretty sure theres going to be a lot more happy people around than before!
