Birthday event returns

The Birthday of the King, an annual celebration, will be at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday at the Church of the Nazarene in Grandview, 500 N. Elm St.

The event will include holiday decor, desserts and entertainment, honoring the birth of Christ.

Eternity, a trio from Yakima, will provide the entertainment. Fresh cut Christmas trees will be available for purchase after the event.

Santa breakfast nears

Holy Family Catholic Church, 5315 Tieton Drive in Yakima, is hosting its fifth annual "Santa is Coming to Breakfast."

The event is from 8:30-11 a.m. Dec. 5.

All interested people are encouraged to bring a camera to take pictures of their kids with Santa.

There will also be a children's raffle, a silent auction and baked goods for sale.

Admission to the breakfast is $7 for everyone 13 and older. Admission for kids 3-12 is $4.

Listen to holiday jazz

A Night of Christmas Jazz will be at 6 p.m. Sunday at Englewood Christian Church, 511 N. 44th Ave., Yakima.

The traditional worship service will be suspended in order to host a number of musical pieces by the Joe Brooks Quartet.

The next Jazz Night will be Jan. 31.

Englewood Christian is also hosting the community event, Celebrate Christmas with Music! A Night of Christmas "Jazz," Dec. 6. The evening, which begins at 6, will be filled with Christmas tunes as 16 musicians share their talents on French horns, trombones, percussion, piano and more.

Enjoy holiday chuckles

Harvest Community Church in Selah will host comedian Daren Streblow at the "Christmas Comedy Cafe" on Dec. 11.

The event begins at 7 p.m. at the Selah Civic Center.

Tickets are $5 and can be purchased after the Sunday church service (which is held at the Civic Center) or at the church office, Tuesday-Friday, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The church office is at 105B S. First St., Selah.

All proceeds will be donated to a local charity.

Bazaar slated Dec. 5

The women's group of Wesley United Methodist Church is hosting its annual bazaar from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Dec. 5 at the church, 14 N. 48th Ave., Yakima.

There will be many gift items for sale, including jams and jellies, soup mix, bakery items, candy, jewelry and ornaments.

Lunch will be served from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.

And you can recycle, too

Mount Olive Lutheran Church will be holding a recycling day from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Dec. 5 at the church, 7809 Tieton Drive, Yakima.

Newspapers, magazines and aluminum cans are needed.

Proceeds will benefit the Feeding 5000 project, which is being done with Children of the Nations, an agency out of Silverdale, Wash. The Feeding 5000 packaging day for 2010 is April 17.

Enjoy soup, sandwiches

Peace Lutheran Church in Selah will host Wednesday night soup and sandwich suppers followed by an informal worship service.

The dates are Dec. 2, 9 and 16, all at 6 p.m. Worship starts at 6:45 p.m.

The annual Christmas program will be at the 10:30 a.m. worship service Dec. 20.

Testing on AIDS Day

On World AIDS Day, commemorated every Dec. 1 in memory of the 25 million people who have lost their lives to the pandemic over the past 30 years, several community activities are taking place Tuesday.

Yakima Neighborhood Health at 12 S. Eighth St. will offer free HIV and hepatitis C testing and information services from 4-6 p.m. Testimonies will take place 6-6:30 p.m.

A candlelight walk begins at the clinic at 6:30 p.m., continuing to St. Michael's Episcopal Church, 5 S. Naches Ave., for a Service of Remembrance and Healing at 7 p.m. A reception will follow.

AIDS quilts will be on display in the lobbies of both the clinic and the church.

Firewood needed

With the arrival of the colder temperatures, 107 House Emergency Services, part of Yakima Interfaith Coalition, is looking for people to help supply emergency firewood to heat homes. The agency, which provides services to the needy, has received numerous requests for heating help.

Annual concert is Dec. 6

Bel Canto's 30th annual Christmas Concert will be at 3 p.m. Dec. 6 at Yakima Evangelical Church, 7901 W. Nob Hill Blvd., Yakima.

The theme of this year's concert is "A Holiday Revue."

Bel Canto has been active since it formed in 1952. Performing will be Bel Canto's Choral group, Bel Canto's Ensemble and the 2009 Bel Canto music scholarship winners.

Admission is free. Donations of money and nonperishable food items or clothing will be accepted.

Food, clothing and 50 percent of the cash donations will go to Sunrise Outreach Ministries' extreme weather shelters. The remaining funds will help support music education by providing annual scholarships to area students.

The Evangelical Ministries Association of Yakima invites Christian leaders to a noon lunch Wednesday at Westpark United Methodist Church, 3902 Summitview Ave.
