CLE ELUM -- A 19-year-old Centralia, Wash., man was hurt Thursday evening when he hit a car whose driver had stopped for an elk near Cle Elum, the Washington State Patrol reported.
Luis Iniguez Mendez was treated at Kittitas Valley Community Hospital for head and neck injuries. A nursing supervisor could not immediately be reached for an update on his condition Thursday night.
The two occupants of the other car -- driver Davis Harsh, 20, and passenger Maryanne Fisher, 18, both of Tumwater, Wash. -- were not hurt, troopers said.
The crash was reported shortly before 6 p.m. on U.S. Highway 97 about a mile north of the intersection with State Route 970, about 10 miles from Cle Elum.
Iniguez Mendez was southbound on Highway 97 in a Mitsubishi Galant when he hit Harsh's Ford Taurus. Harsh had stopped for an elk, according to a patrol news release.
Troopers blamed the crash on inattention and said Iniguez Mendez would be given a ticket for driving too fast for conditions and not having insurance.
All three occupants were wearing seat belts, and intoxicants were not suspected, authorities said.
