SUNNYSIDE, Wash. -- A second close election in the Yakima Valley is headed toward a recount.
Sunnyside City Councilwoman Carol Stone, whose re-election bid lags by seven votes to challenger Don Vlieger, has requested a recount.
She will get one because she paid for it, said Yakima County Auditor Corky Mattingly.
In a Selah, the race for a City Council seat between John Gawlik and Allen Schmid is headed to a voter-financed recount. That's because under state law a recount is mandated when there's less than a half percent difference between two candidates. Gawlik has 681 votes to Schmid's 676.
The recounts will start at 8:30 a.m. Dec. 7 in the elections processing room at the Yakima County Courthouse.
Vlieger, an inn owner, beat Stone, a homemaker, 662 votes to 655, a spread of 50.27 percent to 49.73 percent.
Stone has paid $344, or 25 cents per ballot, for the recount, Mattingly said.
"It's not over until it's over," she said.
In Selah, Gawlik beat Schmid 681-676, a difference of only .36 percent, triggering the automatic recount.
Hey, I didn't vote, didn't turn in my ballot, but I would have voted for Stone. Dang.
