Man arrested after drive-by shootings, chase near Toppenish

Yakima Herald-Republic

TOPPENISH, Wash. —  Authorities on Saturday night arrested a 19-year-old Buena man who they say sideswiped a patrol car during a high-speed chase after multiple drive-by shootings.

It began with reports from Toppenish police of multiple drive-by shootings in the Toppenish area about 2 p.m., according to a news release from the Yakima County Sheriff’s Office. When a deputy in the area attempted to pull over a suspicious vehicle near the intersection  of Fraley and Buena roads, the driver took off at speeds that exceeded 100 mph.

The chase went on for several miles, and at one point the driver ran off the road at the intersection of McDonald Road and Rowberry Way, just outside of Toppenish.

As the driver maneuvered back onto McDonald Road, his vehicle sideswiped a deputy’s patrol car. The deputy was not injured.

Later in the chase, officers slowed down due to poor visibility on the dusty Willowtree Lane, authorities said. Moments later, the vehicle was found abandoned inside a mobile home court on Willowtree Lane.

Deputies found a scoped rifle in the vehicle, along with spent shell casings and bullets, according to the release.

After a search of the area, deputies found two people believed to have been passengers during the pursuit.

About seven hours later, deputies found the man they believe to have been the driver inside his Buena home. The man — who authorities say has gang connections — had shaved his head in an apparent attempt to change his appearance.

Deputies are investigating whether the rifle found in the man’s vehicle is connected to a shooting reported about 1:45 a.m. Saturday on Crewport Lane, north of Granger.

The man was arrested on pending charges of eluding and second-degree assault.

Olympia, where are you? We need you NOW, not next year!

Since the sheriff has decide to let the gangs run over him with his non-enforcement immigration policy, I guess he deserves what we are getting - gangers who thumb their noses at the law and the rest of us. They carry on their private little wars while we stand idly by in the crossfire.

Melissa, and YHR: I have a suggestion for an investigative report. Since law enforcement continues to ignore the protests from community at large, perhaps we can get the local businesses on board, since it hurts them where they most feel the pain - in their wallets.

How about the affects of our gang problems, which occur almost daily since last summer, and its impact on tourism here? Since the businessmen of the community have bought into the tourism attractions centered around the huge influx and popularity of wineries, there is a massive investment and expansion by the community in this segment of the hospitality industry.

Are we to continue to ignore the fact that many visitors hear and read about all our violent crime here all around the state, and even further? The problem is that they decline to stay in Yakima as a result of their fears. One major goal of the YVVCB is to make Yakima a 24 to 48 hour town, instead of the 4-8 hour town we are now. That means that people pass us by instead of staying here overnight. They continue through to palces like the Tri-Cities or Walla Walla, as destinations instead of Yakima.

How much do the gangs contribute to a negative public perception of our once-fine valley? More than we would like to admit, in my opinion.

Example: I know of several hotels just a short walk from our central downtown that have been ruled out for weekend visitors because people are afraid to walk through that area on the way between downtown and their hotel. I think the Chamber of Commerce and the Visitors and Convention Bureau should make this unspoken problem a new focus of their attention.

Maybe with added pressure from that segment of our community, we will get some action regarding law enforcement and the necessary tools from Olympia to make it happen - including those laws that were ignored in prior years that I believe are the primary root cause of most of the problems we face here with violent crime - illegal immigration.

The sheriff, in your recent article about this subject, said that there area more problems from meth than illegals. Well, he may be right. But where does the meth come from? Where do the other illegal drugs come from? Who controls the "retail" sales and distribution of these to the users?

In every case, the local gangs is likely the best answer.

Nick, get real man.

In your comment:

"But where does the meth come from? Where do the other illegal drugs come from? Who controls the "retail" sales and distribution of these to the users?"

Well, to answer your question, meth comes from the US, its made here for the most part because the demand is great here in the USA, specifically with many Anglos. They are very much into that drug and its obvious. If there is a demand, someone will try to meet it. But maybe instead ONLY focusing on the ones supplying, we should ALSO address those that demand it. Marinate on that Nick, you seem to forget this very important FACT. The rest of the drugs that also come here, yes many do come from the South, but again, the demand is there. Instead of dancing around the REAL issue, why don't you address the actual problem.......people who want these horrible drugs. Many of course being White/Anglos.

And for your information, most gang members are not illegals, most are US citizens or residents. And the illegal gang members that get busted for doing something stupid, usually get deported once caught, so they don't stay long if they get caught. The real problem unfortunetly are people who are legally in the US.

You seem to be so against illegal immigrants that you are blinded by problems caused by LEGAL citizens. Maybe you need to open your eyes more and tell your cousins and extended family to get off meth, so people stop supplying it.

Sorry if I am generalizing that YOUR folks are the problem, but hey, you do the same in blaming all problems on illegals. I am a US citizen by birth, and probably more patriotic than you, but you still hate on people like me by using that same lame argument that all of our countries problems are caused by Mexicans, which you of course by default call illegals. You need to change your mindset and recognize Nick. Otherwise, if you are right, then so I am I.

Have a great one!

Lots of truth in what NICK writes. The East side of the mountain is a large chunk of who our lower valley business's try to bring over here. Maybe they should read comments from them on what goes on in this valley in the Seattle Times. Very negative and discouraging that we are thought of as pansies being run over by gangs. Hey maybe the drug trade brings in more money? Not sure why it is that difficult to be rid of these people who have no concern nor respect for our valley.

Agree with ChincanFamily also. If there was no money to be had by selling drugs a lot of problems whould be dealt with. And please people quite treating this druggies as poor sheep who have lost there way. We need to stop making everyone else pay for some who can't pull themselves up and do life right. I have been there --done that and belive me if i can do it anyone can. Takes strength and courage but you can do it with out crying and using tax payers money. I paid my own way to clean up my mess. Try some respect both for yourself and for others-- it will do you a world of good.

Why doesnt the Yakima Herald post the names of these thugs like the Tri City Herald does. Let the valley know who these people are. They could be a neighbor or a child care provider or a coworker. Would be nice to know who these cancers of society are.

Don't stand by in the crossfires, get your buns somewhere safe. Is it the Sheriff or the Washington State Sheriff's association? I've seen these day labor things setting up in Seattle, too.

very good words Nick, so true and right, but unforunately for you Chicanofamily, your wrong, 80% of the meth and drugs flowing into the valley are from Hispanics, and most of them are not here legally. This is a fact! What is crazy is the statistics show is a large majority of the meth users are white, go figure. Bigpapadad is also right about the Herald should be publishing these people's names. I wish each of all of you, your great passion about this problem could magically do something about this increasingly gang violence in the valley. Each of you on this discussion brings your own opinion, some agree, some don't, and some well, just don't have a clue of what the article was written about, but, please keep up the passion because people read the feedback and each of you bring a good point. I just keep praying for the valley to rid of this evil gangs and heal from the violence.

I'm not sure but I think that cartoon is supposed to be Sheriff Irwin in front of that illegal daycare at downtown Triumph Treatment at 102 s. Naches. There's not supposed to be a daycare there it doesn't have a license and I guess the artist is blaming Ken Irwin because the Yakima county official website had been advertising it as a legal daycare. I guess poor Bill Gates has been giving them money also. I think they're going to keep making cartoons and stuff about poor Sheriff Irwin until he's man enough to shut it down. Poor guy, it's kinda pitiful. Boy, if he's ever caught going in that place it better be to save those kids. He's the poor, pitiful sheriff that's been caught with all the completely inaccurate and misleading stuff on his pedophile website. I guess he just thought that being a "pretty boy" and smiling all the time and he could be a respected lawman. Man,I sure wouldn't want to be this old fool! He'll be laughed out of every lawman's association north of the Rio Grande. Oh, well, respect isn't everything I guess. I guess that hag with the buck teeth is Patty Murray, she's the one with all the "Early Childhood Education" stuff and I guess this flea bag treatment center was stealing their money with an illegal daycare that pervs could hang out at. According to my sources everybody knew they were supposed to shut it down, but legally because the county did the drug court the were illegal sending lightweight "small time pot users with kids" here in the midsts of these monsters, it falls completely on dorky Irwin. What a loser. What a disgusting loser. I still don't think the Sheriff has gone and shut this down. What a wimp icky icky ooh unclean unclean oooh mr. irwin get out of your uniform unclean unclean!!!!!!!!!!

Before continueing your ethnic denigration, I suggest you provide some evidence to some of your wild claims.

Its one thing to want less crime, its another to play ignorant and start blaming minorities simply becuase its convenient for you to do so.

Anywho, according to this government source: http://www.justice.gov/ndic/pubs3/3138/meth.htm

"Methamphetamine is produced in Washington primarily by Caucasian criminal groups and local independents"

Oh do I love exposing people's ignorance.
