Julie Deramo of Yakima addresses a letter to U.S. Rep. Doc Hastings before a meeting of several local groups on illegal immigration and other topics at the Gardner Grange in Yakima, Wash. Saturday, Nov. 14, 2009. Deramo said this was the first meeting of this kind she had attended, and was compelled to go because, "I don't recognize America now," she said. "It blows me away."

YAKIMA, Wash. -- Wearing T-shirts bearing the slogan "Stop the Invasion" and applauding exhortations to "take back our country," opponents of amnesty for illegal immigrants gathered at a Grange hall in Yakima.

About 65 people attended Saturday's event, dubbed "Tea Party Against Amnesty and Illegal Immigration," at the Gardner Grange to hear a former U.S. Border Patrol agent speak and write quick letters to government officials.

"We can deal with it (illegal immigration)," Kent Lundgren, founder and past chairman of the National Association of Former Border Patrol Officers, told the audience. "We have lost the will to deal with it."

The event was one of 53 similar rallies held across the country Saturday to speak out against immigration reforms proposed by President Barack Obama's administration. The suggestions include a form of amnesty for undocumented immigrants already living in the United States, as well as promise for tougher enforcement and a streamlined system for legal immigration.

The attendees, some who came from Seattle and Prosser, shared coffee and homemade cookies with a backdrop of patriotic music, including "Ragged Old Flag" by Johnny Cash, coming from speakers hooked to a laptop. Afterward, about 20 or so waved flags and protest signs on the corner of Summitview and 40th avenues.

The rally was organized by several conservative nonprofit groups, Grass Roots of Yakima Valley, Minutemen Civil Defense Corps, Remember Us We the People and Yakima 9/12 Group.

Lundgren, the guest speaker, served more than 30 years in the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service, the precursor to the current Immigration and Customs Enforcement office.

To sporadic applause and an occasional "Amen," Lundgren told the audience that amnesty for current illegal immigrants would only encourage more illegal immigration.

What's more, he said, many Mexicans believe the same thing, according to a October Zogby International poll.

In the survey of about 1,000 people in Mexico, about 56 percent of the respondents thought giving legal status to illegal immigrants in the United States would make it more likely that people they know would go to the U.S. illegally.

Lundgren supervised the Yakima immigration office during President Ronald Reagan's amnesty in 1986. He called it a "disaster," leading to new waves of illegal immigrants.

He criticized the govern-ment for not doing enough to track down immigrants who have overstayed temporary visas, local law enforcement agencies for not communicating well with federal immigration agents, and states for issuing fishing and driver's licenses to undocumented immigrants.

"You don't get anything unless you can prove you belong here," he said.

After the speech, audience members huddled around tables to draft short letters to Obama and U.S. Sens. Maria Cantwell and Patty Murray, urging them to tighten border security, empower local police to enforce immigration laws, and crack down on employers that knowingly hire undocumented workers, among other pleas.

Organizers collected 40 handwritten letters and planned to fax them.

Merle and Dorothy Smith of Selah were among the letter writers.

Merle, 78, said he unknowingly hires illegal immigrants for his small cherry orchard occasionally. He takes down Social Security numbers during his seasonal harvest but can't tell if they're legitimate or not when lining up for work at 5:30 a.m. Months later, he gets a letter from the Social Security Administration notifying him of invalid numbers.

"There's no way to really tell," he said. "I don't think I should have to be the policeman. I got enough problems on my hands that time of morning."

Julie Deramo of Yakima said she is so frustrated by illegal immigration, bank bailouts and other polit-
ical issues that she is considering dropping her Republican Party mem-bership and registering as an independent.

The 40-year-old mother of two and former Marine said, "I have to do something."

Besides immigration, participants spoke in favor of limiting instruction in schools to English only and viewing global warming with skepticism.

All stressed they only opposed illegal immigration, not all immigrants or Mexicans.

"Many of us are already considered racist," said Bob West, chair of Grass Roots of Yakima Valley. "We need to expand our efforts to fight political correctness."

The problem is, when we speak out about the stressors and burdens that our country is dealing with due to the influx of people from other countries who enter illegally, and their offspring who are born to "people who are in our country without a green card" (got to be politically correct), we get labeled as racists and/or xenophobics. We are no longer the land of wide open spaces, waiting to be discovered. Our cities are over burdened, poverty is escalating, medical services are denied to many of our citizens. We need to tighten the immigration laws, not loosen them! We can no longer afford to offer automatic birthrights if born in this country. How about this:

Reform the immigration laws to reflect what most first world nations have concerning immigration - much tighter policies that now exist. Enforce these immigration laws. If you are illegal you get shipped home pronto. This includes putting the wood to any employers who still hire illegals.

Have a guest worker program that is monitored more closely. The guest workers should have to pay taxes and pay the costs for their kids to go to our schools. They should also be required to have health insurance. Their worker card should be revoked if they become a burden on US citizens. And the card should not last indefinitely! No automatic citizenship for the offspring, they are guests.

"Lundgren supervised the Yakima immigration office during President Ronald Reagan's amnesty in 1986. He called it a "disaster," leading to new waves of illegal immigrants."

What more can you ask for in the way of verification of facts than a former INS Agent who supervised the program? Furthermore, the Reagan amnesty not only didn't work, but it helped to create the problem we have here today?

A grower said that,"He (the grower) takes down Social Security numbers during his seasonal harvest but can't tell if they're legitimate or not when lining up for work at 5:30 a.m. Months later, he gets a letter from the Social Security Administration notifying him of invalid numbers."

Absolutely correct.

"There's no way to really tell," he said. "I don't think I should have to be the policeman. I got enough problems on my hands that time of morning."

Absolutely wrong. All he has to do is sign up for and use E-Verify, which any business or government agency can do - that is why the program as created and check the an there. It tales less than a minute to tell if an applicant's ID is fake or stolen.

Employer sanctions are the only laws that work. Fine or imprison every employer of illegal aliens. The criminals will then self deport. Come to think of it, deport the employers as well.

American voice, the reason people like you are labaled xenophobic is because its darn near impossible for you to look at this as a non black and white issue. When will accept the fact that illegal immigrants put more taxes into the system than take out... and have lower crime rates.

No matter the stats, all you do is find a few examples, and generalize a large group of people.

If that isn't racism I don't know what is.

Why if your home is in the United States? Why if you have are law abiding and paying taxes (like 3/4 of illegal immigrants)...

Honest question, why do you feel threatened by them?

Thank you Sid515 for being a voice of reason. Our system is broken that is pretty obvious. we have the highest minimum wage in the country. our hospitals will treat us even if we dont have any money. if you are an undocumented alien you contribute income tax and unemployment but can never draw it. If you are a citizen you can claim social security, medicare, medicaid, unemployement, you can even join a union and force your employer to build airplanes in another state. You can shop at Walmart and help China become the most powerful country in the world. we dont want to pay for $10 tomatoes so we import them from Chile. we can continue to harvest the rainforest. we can turn our backs as Japan farms whales. we can continue to drive our motorhomes and 4x4's and complain that the Saudi's are funding terrorists in Afghanistan. we can punish employers for hiring undocumented aliens and collect unemployment while we watch our flat panel cable tv in our heated and air conditioned houses. we can secure our borders with 1000's of miles of fences and hire millions of border patrol officers so we can complain the border patrol officers are leeches on society. lets close our borders and deport anyone who's family has immigrated here from a foreign country! come on folks there are some good ideas here, pick one so you can hate someone new.

Sweet little Patty Murray, she just loves the illegal aliens so much that she rewards them with illegal youth centers where their children can race around all night long with pedophiles watching every move, gives them "special" treatment and are allowed to go to school with thousands of lice eggs (just so long as there are no "live bugs" according to a school official) and we're all to believe that this in no way effects us negatively. Now, the question, is Maria in on all this too, or does she need to be indoctrinated a bit more? What about Hillary?

The public is upset and should be, they and their communities have been harmed by the current situation. But, at some point we need to figure out how to cleanup this mess.

Like so many problems, we can do effective things or we can engage in theater. Theater looks like something is being done, but actually doesn't solve the problem.

The only real way to stop the flow is to end the lure of jobs.

1) That means all employers need to verify legal status before starting work - even a t 5:00 am a cell phone can call the house or office to check SSNs and names with e-Verify. When you start making exceptions you open the door again. For employers to claim it is not their responsibility is painfully transparent, it is their illegal activity (hiring illegals) that is the cause of the problem.

2) Industries, like Ag, that need guest workers need to work with the politicians to come up with a program that works all the way around. The fact they haven't done it yet, will put them in a crunch, but it is a crunch they created.

The problem with the Reagan era amnesty is that only the public thought it was going to solve the problem. No one else wanted the problem fixed. Ag, industry, the Chamber of commerce, other trade groups want the flood to continue to drive down wages and reduce the need to pay benefits. Many run active recruiting campaigns in south of the border. Eliminate the lure of jobs and this too goes away.

If the hard working, low paying jobs such as agriculture jobs were not available, they would not come. Want them to stop? Then Americans needs to get off their lazy butts and get to work. They need to quit whining that it hurts to stand..when they can stand on a corner and mooch. If we made it mandatory that our system leeches and to pick so many days during harvest through the three seasons in order to collect welfare. That would make a huge difference. The illegals take the jobs that we are to lazy or soft to do.

Sid - don't be absurd. You just make yourself look stupid.

Nobody here has anything against LEGAL immigrants, (as opposed to ILLEGAL ALIENS) working hard and living here. The more the merrier.

However, I will stand by ANYONE who comes to this country legally and demands a living wage for their work - especially when they demonstrate the quality and work-ethic historically demonstrated by the Hispanic farm worker. They deserve nothing less.

As soon as their contribution to the labor force is properly recognized by employers with a fair pay scale that is commensurate with the work they do, I will be satisfied that the playing field for jobs will be competitive and more level.

The sooner we start prosecuting the real cause of the problem - the job magnet created and carried on by the employers who take advantage of these people and their needs, the better.

Our government - all segments of it - must start performing their obligations to us citizens as well - by enforcing existing immigration laws according to their oaths of office.

I really wish that was true. After reading so many blogs on here I find it hard to believe. Does not apply to everyone though.

Nick, you must be on some meth or something! How can you pretend you are in favor of "Legal Immigrants" and say you would support they get paid better, but in every article that you blog about you blame immigrants for the problem, even if it has nothing to do with immigration?

If there is a gang problem, you blame it on illegals. If there is car chase, you blame it on illegals, higher taxes, blame the illegals! You really are starting to sound like a broken record. Will you blame the economy on illegals too?

You make me laugh with your comments b/c you contradict yourself all the time. I am beginning to think you are playing a practical joke on us b/c your comments are not consistent or informed. Are you a HS drop out? You sure have a narrow view of the world and our City.

Tell you what Nick, if you really support "LEGAL Immigrants" I want to see you at the next picket line when LEGAL immigrants and citizen farmworkers are demanding fairer wages. In fact, I'd like to see you do that type of work and then address the wages. That would be interesting and it would be putting your money where your mouth is. Anything less than that is hypocritical on your part.

Also, you blame drugs on illegals. Let me flip it on you while I point out a fact.

I blame drugs on LEGALS, specifically White/Anglo LEGALS who are demanding these drugs. Its their fault, b/c if they did not demand these illegal drugs, no one from down south would go through the trouble in importing them to OUR country. And yes this is MY country as I am an US American born of Mexican parents. I probably have a bigger US flag hanging from my house than your dinky Confederated Flag in your pick up. Don't trip, just letting you know that the USA is more my country than yours b/c my ancestors where actually from the AMERICAS, and did not cross an entire ocean like your great ancestors did. Brings a new meaning to the word "wetback" huh?

Anyways Nick, the biggest drug problem here in our area is Meth, which is made locally and within our state. Most of that is produced by Hillbilly Rednecks in farms and is consummed and demanded mostly by White/Anglos, more than anyone else. Its just so obvious, I am surprized you missed that reality. Maybe you should address this problem, which is primarily caused by Anglo/White folks first, and if you successfully stop this BIG problem of the 'demand", then perhaps you can stop the supply.

Just a thought.

God Bless MY Country, the Good Old US of A.

There's no incentive to be legal. Patty Murray has seen to that. If they stay illegal the man can live and work right with his family. She draws welfare and food stamps and he works. Got a nice house on the Westside. Got illegals? Watch on the 1st, the spending spree and on the 5th the large purchases of food. And the whole family is also working. They don't become legal unless they're born here.
