Yakima Curves closes

YAKIMA, Wash. -- The Yakima Curves has closed.

A sign on the door of the facility, a fitness and weight-loss franchise that caters to women, says the closure is due to the current economic conditions and the fact the gym "has not been able to regain substantial membership to continue operations and pay
expenses ... "

The sign also informs members they can transfer their memberships to nearby Curves locations. Transfers should be made by Dec. 1, according to the sign.

The phone number for the Yakima Curves, located at 5623 Summitview Ave. in the Chalet Place shopping center, appears to have been disconnected.

Curves spokeswoman Becky Frusher couldn't be reached for comment Friday at Curves headquarters in Waco, Texas.

Neither could Yakima curves owner Kristie Cannon.

"This is probably one of the worst things I have had to do, but it was a business decision," she wrote on the sign. "Due to the continuing recession and on the advice of my attorney and doctor, this Curves is closed."

According to the Curves Web site at www.curves.com, the franchise has nearly 10,000 locations in more than 60 countries.

There are five other Curves locations in the Yakima Valley, according to the Web site. They are located in Union Gap, Selah, Ellensburg, Sunnyside and Prosser.
