EASTON, Wash. — Winter’s first big snowstorm on Snoqualmie Pass is expected to dump more than a foot of snow by Saturday morning.

Motorists traveling over the mountain may want to plan their trip for an expected break in the storm between noon and 4 p.m., says spokesman Mike Westbay of the state Department of Transportation.

Heavy snowfall hit about 6:30 this morning.

State troopers are dealing with a series of minor weather-related crashes on both sides of the pass. Westbay says the eastbound route was temporarily closed about 15 miles east of North Bend because of collisions that blocked the road.

Traction tires are required for passenger vehicles.

Westbay recommends that drivers give themselves more time and drive cautiously because of the slippery conditions.

Parents and students heading to several high school sports tournaments in Western Washington are expected to add to traffic congestion through this weekend.

Meanwhile, the Summit at Snoqualmie has not declared an opening date, according to its Web site.

White Pass Ski Area’s lower runs open today, the earliest start since 1994.
