Ellensburg police car rear-ended

KITTITAS, Wash. -- Ellensburg police say a patrol car driven by one of their officers was hit by a drunken driver last night as the officer returned from making an arrest in the town of Kittitas.

According to Dan Hansberry, operations captain for the Ellensburg Police Department, at about 11:20 p.m., the officer had just taken a juvenile female from Kittitas into custody for a theft in the city of Ellensburg and was driving back to the city when his car was struck by a passenger vehicle. The crash caused significant damage to the patrol car but no one was injured.

Police said the officer was able to activate his emergency lights, turn around and stop the car. Officers from the Kittitas Police Department, deputies from Kittitas County Sheriff’s Office and a state trooper arrived to assist.

The 60-year-old male driver of the car was arrested for driving under the influence and the case was turned over to the Washington State Patrol.
