Two airlifted to Seattle hospital after accident north of Sunnyside

SUNNYSIDE, Wash. -- Two people were in serious condition Sunday in a Seattle hospital after a pickup and van collided Saturday evening about 10 miles north of Sunnyside on State Route 241.

According to a news release from the Washington State Patrol, Juan M. Zuniga, 19, of Sunnyside was northbound when his 2003 Toyota pickup drifted into the shoulder. When he overcorrected, the vehicle crossed the center line, striking a southbound Mercury Villager.

The Mercury’s driver, Cristobal Rico Villarreal, 35, and a passenger, Ricarda Gomez Camacho, 33, both of Mattawa, suffered unspecified injuries and were airlifted to Seattle’s Harborview Medical Center.

Their conditions were not available Sunday afternoon.

Neither Zuniga nor his passenger, Jennifer L. Smith, 17, of Sunnyside were injured, the State Patrol said.

Intoxicants are suspected in the crash, which destroyed both vehicles, according to the news release.
