PROSSER, Wash. - A 20-year-old Grandview woman was killed in a head-on crash on Interstate 82 near Prosser early Saturday morning when a pickup crossed into the wrong lane of traffic and hit her car.
Angelica Barajas was declared dead at the scene, according to the Washington State Patrol.
Edward Castilleja, 49, of Prosser was eastbound on I-82 in a 2008 Chevrolet pickup when he drove onto the westbound lanes, striking the 2007 Chrysler 300 that Barajas was driving head-on, according to the state patrol. The crash took place about 3 a.m. at the Benton and Yakima county line.
An 11-year-old girl from Grandview traveling with Barajas was taken to Sunnyside Community Hospital, where she was being treated for “non-life-threatening injuries,” according to a hospital spokesman.
Castilleja also was taken to Sunnyside Community Hospital with injuries, the state patrol reported.
All three people were wearing seatbelts, according to the state patrol. Both vehicles were totaled.
State troopers say they believe alcohol or drugs were a factor in the accident and an investigation is continuing.
The Yakima Herald Republic tells us if these people were wearing seatbelts...poses the question that drugs or alcohol might be involved...however, again the newspaper drops the ball by failing to tell us if either of these vehicles had proper minimal liability insurance.
If either of these drivers is part of the 20% state-wide that lack minimal liability insurance, this should be noted is this story, as IT IS NEWSWORTHY!!!
If they had no insurance, they had no business driving in the first place.
Wow, some one loses their life and you're concernened with insurance status?
Report ViolationFREDO...Obviously you've never had an encounter with an uninsured motorist. The next time you're stopped at a stoplight, count five vehicles, and one out of the five most likely does not have minimum liability insurance. Washington State has one of the highest uninsured motorist percentages of all states in the U.S.
I've had a family member who was seriously injured, and had their vehicle totalled by an uninsured motorist.
Our do-nothing elected officials in Washington State refuse to address this serious problem. I've written to Norm Johnson and Charles Ross, yet they don't respond via letter, e-mail, or phone. Some representation we have here.
Washington State needs tough laws that allow law enforcement agencies to remove license plates and vehicles from our state's roads and highways that are lacking basic insurance. It's in the best interest of all of us.
aamodtbd, you're OBVIOUSLY wrong. I've unfortunately have encountered uninsured motorist due to fender benders. I'm not down playing how serious of a problem this is but I'm only pointing out that someone has lost their life. I work in a ER as a Physician Assistant and I guess I just have different perspective for life.
Report Violationforgot to mention that I do agree with you, we do need to fix our current system.
Report Violationaamodtdb, do you sell insurance because you sure act like it the way you want to rule with the iron fist. I agree we have a problem with uninsured but your comments when families are dealing with deaths in there families is a lack of class. The more laws we have on enforcement of insurance the more the companies can raise there prices. Which if you sell insurance you would have no problem with. My prayers go out to the families, white , hispanic, or other, for their loss
Report ViolationBIGPAPAD...
My point is this perhaps the individual killed would still be alive if we kept uninsured motorists/vehicles off the road. No, I do not, and have never sold insurance.
We have a serious problem with uninsured motorists in the state of Washington, and NOTHING is being done about it. You can bury your head in the sand and make believe we don't have a problem, however that does not change reality. You have a right to your opinion, however you do not have a right to your own facts.
I too mourn those who lost a family member and friend so unnecessarily. I want the problem fixed!
