YAKIMA, Wash. -- More volunteers are needed to staff winter homeless shelters or they won’t open on time next week, organizers said this morning.
Extreme Winter Weather Shelter project director Dave Hanson says he will postpone the opening date for the shelters unless enough volunteers sign up and attend training before the planned opening on Nov. 15.
Hanson said the turnout for training to date has not been sufficient. Hanson said he needs 250 volunteers to operate the full program and at least 30 overnight volunteers to open one of the four shelters.
Shelter volunteers set their own schedules. “We value the time our volunteers give and work to accommodate their individual schedules,” Hanson said.
Each volunteer attends a 90-minute training on the basics of shelter operation. The next sessions are Saturday at 10:30 a.m. and Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. Both sessions will be held in the Vineyard Christian Fellowship of Yakima, 221 E. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd.
A continental breakfast will be served at the morning session and the evening session will include dessert. Advance registration is not required. Hanson can be reached at (509) 901-9402.

Save money and place them on a bus to Seattle, Olympia, or San Fransico, where they will be welcomed with open arms. Ditto for the gang bangers, ship them out of the area to those locations, make it their problem.
Report ViolationYeah lets ship our problems else were, just like we get the gangsters from other cities. TURLOCK CALIFORNIA ring a bell anyone? see the story on the new shooting.
Report ViolationBacktoUnreality - BRRRR. That's cold. I think I'll approach my faith community and see if there's anyone else that wants to answer this call. There, but for the grace of god they say.
Report ViolationWow....I couldn't agree more YakRob....BacktoReality's comment was worse than cold...it was downright scary! I'll be having shoulder surgery or I'd volunteer.
Report ViolationThe Seattle shelters are full. I just returned yesterday from hauling clothes and baby supplies to the shelter that houses parents and children. I will put the word out of volunteers needed. I must say the being a shelter volunteer is something you can put on your resume, it builds character and demonstrates your diverse personality of caring for others. Not on top of good marks you have with the Big Chief upstairs! Please folks help those who need your support.
