11/08/09 Volunteer Opportunities

Here are this week's volunteer needs in the Yakima Valley:

* TUTORS NEEDED: The Southeast Yakima Community Center Tutoring Program seeks adult tutors for youth in grades K-12. Tutors will provide homework assistance and basic tutorials. Training is provided. The Tutoring Program is open from 3-5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

* PET RESCUE: Yakima Valley Pet Rescue needs volunteers for its Chili Feed fundraiser. The group's next meeting is at 6:30 p.m. Nov. 18 at Jack-Sons Sports Bar, 432 S. 48th Ave. For more information, go to yakimavalleypetrescue.blogs.com or call 509-248-3113.

* HOOVER HELPERS: Hoover Elementary School needs reading tutors Monday from 1 to 2:10 p.m. and Tuesday through Friday from 1 to 3:10 p.m. Tutors will listen to children read and help students improve their reading skills.

All potential volunteers must complete a volunteer application and have a criminal background check done.

* McCLURE HELPERS: McClure Elementary School has several volunteer opportunities.

Reading tutors are needed Monday through Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 10:15 a.m. A tutor will lead a reading group, modeling proper reading techniques.

Office/clerical volunteers are needed Monday through Friday for one to two hours per day to help with such duties as copying and filing. No phone or computer work.

Volunteers are also needed on Thursdays from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. starting Nov. 5 to share their special skills and hobbies with a group of bright, enthusiastic students.

Potential volunteers must complete a volunteer application and have a criminal background check done.

* RAMP BUILDERS: Volunteer Chore Services needs volunteers to build wooden wheelchair ramps to code for low-income elders and low-income adults with disabilities. Volunteers will be paired with current ramp builders and should have basic carpentry skills.

All volunteers must complete an application and have a criminal background check done.

* CHILD CARE HELP: The Yakima School District wants volunteers to assist with child care supervision during English as a second language classes. The district has infants to about seventh-graders who come with parents to these classes. The district is also looking for high school students who may be able to assist.

Opportunities include:

Washington Middle School -- Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, 6 to 8 p.m.

Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary School -- Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, 6 to 8 p.m.

Family Resource Center -- Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, 6 to 8 p.m.

Lewis and Clark Middle School -- Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, 6 to 8 p.m.
