Yakima man wounded in late-night shooting

Yakima Herald-Republic

YAKIMA, Wash. — An 18-year-old Yakima man suffered a minor arm wound in a gang-related shooting late Tuesday, police said.

Officers responded to the area of 24th and West Lincoln avenues about 11:45 p.m. to check on multiple reports of gunfire.

Minutes later, the gunshot victim was dropped off at a city hospital, where he was treated and later released, according to a Yakima Police Department news release.

Four people were in the car. They told police they were driving when an older red sport utility vehicle approached them head-on, and someone opened fire as the vehicle passed.

Bullets shattered the right rear passenger window before striking the man in the right arm, which he had used to cover his face, police said. Two small-caliber bulelts were found in his sweatshirt.

Police identified two other occupants — both men in their early 20s — and said all three known victims are Yakima gang members.

What do we need here to get these gang bangers to show some respect? Shootings occur any time day or night or anywhere. This is getting ridiculous. Maybe a little profiling for gang bangers and guns, road blocks like they do for people driving while drinking or drunk. Unexpected road blocks for cars with guns in them. Come on, do something before we need the National Guard.

I agree with nell. By the time the ACLU, (AntiAmerican Criminal Lovers United) got around to causing any trouble, it would be over with and the gangers would move where there is less hassle.

xganger, how do you know who is who? Maybe it would be good to teach the YPD Gang Unit some of the sign language that goes on so they can recognize what is being telegraphed between them. I would even take your class out of curiosity. Also, since when do these big macho animal windbags care if kids are around or not?

Nick,

to know who is who, two of the biggest gang sides here are the north gangs (red) and south gangs (blue). North gangs in the valley, the most common are LR ( LA RAZA) , NSV ( Northside Villains ), VRC, and etc. These are the ones mostly in Red clothing, number 14, signs they use varies, usually the most common is throwing up your four fingers to show a 4. These are the nortenos, or northsiders. South gangs in the valley, the most common big ones are PBS ( playboy surenos, LVL ( lower valley locos ) , SSF ( south side familia) and many others that go out of the valley to wapato, zillah, buena, etc. These are the ones dressed in blue. There number 13, the have different hand signals even a whistle, and that can also tell you what they represent. The surenos are mostly the bald ones thats there style. The nortenos mostly all majority have hair, there not bald. So those are the lil most common things you can know who is who.

How I know ?
I been around this stuff, high school, even got in trouble myself with this garbage. That was back then tho.

It's time this state makes an anti-gang law. I think this is hard to do though because of all the civil rights people getting their feelings hurt and the people who think we shouldn't discriminate people because of race. I'm hispanic and I know that most gang members in this area are hispanic so yea Police should profile them when their dressed in a certain way. I think since these lawmakers aren't affected by gangs they won't do anything about them and might take for one of their children to be hurt or even killed before they do anything about them. As sad as that is its true.

Not enough for the city or state to make drastic changes against gangs.

There wouldn't have to be any discrimination if everyone's car was stopped at a road block. I am not sure, but when they road block for drunk driving, maybe on New Year's Eve, they stop every car, right? Same thing for a regular road block for illegal gun checks. Just an idea, maybe. We would all have to be checked, but I think it would be worth it.

Gangs sell drugs, sell guns, commit crimes and murder. Who else does this? Terrorists in countries aboard. The only difference are terrorists are immediately captured and incarcerated if found in the US. Legistation needs to put gangs in the same category as terrorists. The cops, FBI and other law agencies can track and capture them. I am disappointed how the US goes to other countries and catched their local gangs, ie terrorists, but let the people deal with the domestic terrorism here.
The best tracking tool is myspace. Most gangsters have myspace pages that show proof beyond a reseasonable doubt they are these terrorists (gangs).

I think road blocks for weapon-checks would be a really good idea, considering all of the felons out there that are carrying illegally, and that's not even to mention the gang members. Then stolen cars to boot... Yeah, it would be very effective.

I still think that there is a risk of discrimination though. I mean, will Hispanic hunters be treated the same as white hunters, or will they be held under higher scrutiny? The same thing could be asked for a car full of youths emulating the pop culture of the day. I mean, this dances on the razors edge of being racially offensive, but do any of us really look at a car full of "thugged out" white kids and think, "Oh, they're probably in a gang." In my experience most people assume they're just trying to play a role, but I've found that at least half of them--while maybe not armed or in a gang--don't have any apprehension toward starting trouble. Most people don't consider this, and only pay attention to the people that assume a car full of Hispanic youths dressed the same are gang members. Both are just as ignorant and racist, but only one is really focused on, so while we may do a good job mitigating racial profiling toward Hispanics, unless we make it completely broad and fair, then we will probably be letting some people slip through he cracks.

I don't really think that it's that big of a problem for the entirety of the city to be okay with it though, and so of course then that would lead to the residents of whichever are they are set up in not being in high favor of it, so I'm not quite sure if it would ever even come to a vote.

If gangs were classified as terrorist, this would go around any racial profiling or ACLU issue. Unless the ACLU wants to back terrorist/gangs.

Terrorists also recruit these "soldiers" young, have trainings and housing "gang houses". If this went through, I bet all those gangsters would be running scared and wished they never had pictures out.

I agree with thetruth in that they are terrorists and we should handle them as such. We should also take our troops out of Iraq and Afghanistan and spend the billions we spend over there a month over here to build more prisons to keep these thugs off the streets instead of allowing them to be released because lack of space of our jails now. Parents of gang members should also hold responsibility of their children if they commit crimes and they are juveniles because they are released quickly without punishment. Well if you punish the parents Im sure you will get more parents to keep track of their children and stop them from joining gangs.

Nick, I can tell you that YPD gang unit (and many other officers) are well aware of who is who, and how to tell which gang they are in. They also know a large majority by the tag name. What is funny is that so many gangsters I knew had names like Dopy, droopy, sleepy, lazy. I started thinking they were part of snow white and the 7 dwarfs!

All of us and anyone you know should write to your local legislator and state governor to have gangs be put in the same category as terrorists.

If know one addresses it, it will continue to hamper our community.
