MABTON, Wash. -- If the votes keep moving his way, Councilman Angel Reyna will be the next mayor of Mabton.
Tuesday night, Reyna was holding a clear lead over convenience store owner Daniel Jun in the race to replace embattled Mayor Velva Herrera. Reyna had 79 votes to Jun's 43, giving him two-thirds of the vote.
The incumbent councilman promised Tuesday night to bring a new tone of cooperation to a City Hall often mired in controversy.
"I think it was made clear by the primary which direction we want to head," Reyna said. "I think we won't see much of that, if at all."
At 33, he is the director of workforce education for Yakima Valley Community College and has been on the City Council since 2004.
Herrera was defeated in the August primary after a contentious tenure that included frequent squabbles with other members of the council and accusations of mishandled city finances.
In another Mabton race, Mark Gorneau was leading Maria Rose for City Council Position 3, the spot Reyna gave up to run for mayor, by only four votes.
Gorneau had 56 votes, or 52 percent of the votes counted. Rose had 51 votes.
Gorneau is a 33-year-old resident who plans to start classes at Yakima Valley Community College in January. Rose is a 52-year-old home caregiver for her mother.
Councilwomen Sophia Sotello and Oping Hutson ran unopposed for new four-year terms.

There's no way Mr. Jun had a chance in Mabton, Angel Reyna is related to 85% of Mabton Residents. So we are stuck for another 4 years of controversy. Mabton wouldn't be in a financial crisis if the council had done it's job and Reyna was on the Council for the past 4 years.
Report ViolationI knew Mr. Reyna. He was an all-right guy. As far as I know thats all I can say.
Report ViolationYeah, wow, look at all those votes. Man, what a turnout. Nothing will change. The city is bankrupt and no grants will be allowed because you guys can't balance a budget. And no new officers will be hired. Turning this town around will take an act of God and a person who can use a calculator. Maybe if Herrera hadn't fired all the previous staff who really ran the city you guys would still have cops and a clean town. Is Angel going to paint over all the graffiti himself? UNINCORPORATION IS WHERE YOU'RE HEADING! HAHAHAHAHAHA!
Report ViolationAhhhh is it really change when he has been part of the problem for the past four years? He states he wants change but continues to support paying an individual $50/hr plus mileage and she still has not produced a budget...how long do you keep that up? Oh, and that is not to mention the $40,000 plus to the auditor's office.
Report ViolationLily50. You're awesome. Why would anyone want to be the mayor of Mabton? They need to let the county run the town, the council and other leaders are completely incapable of running anything.
Report ViolationI personally think Angel has a personal agenda with his partner city councilman Mario Martinez whom has property and wants the city to pay for water lines and other various expenses with our taxpayer dollars. Let's see how much he really helps the city of Mabton, before he helps his buddy out.
Report ViolationDon't worry. Mabton doesn't even have there 2009 budget done. They won't be getting any money.
Report ViolationIt seems that the comments here are more negative than constructive. Perhaps the issue isn't the councilmen or the mayor, but is the Mabton community. Since less than ten percent of Mabton’s population actually voted it would seem that there is a general disinterest in how the town is managed. Maybe we should be asking ourselves how we can help get the community involved instead of standing in the shadows grumbling about how someone else is doing a horrible job. Post something constructive and maybe your thoughts, opinions and ideas will be heard by someone who can do something about it. Take pride in your town, ask yourself what you’ve done to help out lately, and then do something for your community instead of complaining about a poor budget.
