MABTON, Wash. -- If the votes keep moving his way, Councilman Angel Reyna will be the next mayor of Mabton.
Tuesday night, Reyna was holding a clear lead over convenience store owner Daniel Jun in the race to replace embattled Mayor Velva Herrera. Reyna had 79 votes to Jun's 43, giving him two-thirds of the vote.
The incumbent councilman promised Tuesday night to bring a new tone of cooperation to a City Hall often mired in controversy.
"I think it was made clear by the primary which direction we want to head," Reyna said. "I think we won't see much of that, if at all."
At 33, he is the director of workforce education for Yakima Valley Community College and has been on the City Council since 2004.
Herrera was defeated in the August primary after a contentious tenure that included frequent squabbles with other members of the council and accusations of mishandled city finances.
In another Mabton race, Mark Gorneau was leading Maria Rose for City Council Position 3, the spot Reyna gave up to run for mayor, by only four votes.
Gorneau had 56 votes, or 52 percent of the votes counted. Rose had 51 votes.
Gorneau is a 33-year-old resident who plans to start classes at Yakima Valley Community College in January. Rose is a 52-year-old home caregiver for her mother.
Councilwomen Sophia Sotello and Oping Hutson ran unopposed for new four-year terms.
