YAKIMA, Wash. -- A man arrested in connection with the shooting of a rival gang member near Davis High School on Wednesday had just made a court appearance Monday in connection with a gang-related robbery.

Police said in both cases that the 18-year-old suspect was involved in confronting the victims over rival gang affiliation. The victim in the shooting was a known gang member from Granger, but a report on the robbery described that victim only as a 28-year-old Yakima man who was riding home on his bicycle earlier this month.

Police said the robbery victim identified the suspect as part of a group who confronted him earlier this month over claims that he was wearing the wrong color of jacket in their gang territory.

The man told police that he feared for his life and removed the jacket, which was taken by the suspects, along with the man's bicycle chain. The chain had come off the sprocket, forcing the man to stop for repairs in the parking lot of a market near the corner of Fair Avenue and Nob Hill Boulevard, according to the arrest report.

The suspect was charged with second-degree robbery and released on $10,000 bail. He was arraigned Monday.

Both he and his 17-year-old brother, a Davis High School student who witnesses identified as the shooter in Wednesday's case, made preliminary appearances in Yakima County Superior Court.

The younger one, who is in custody on $1 million bail, is expected to face an automatic transfer to adult court based on his age and the seriousness of the charge.

The older defendant is being held on $250,000 bail. Police said he was identified as the one who started the fight with the gunshot victim and his friend, who were washing a car at a Walnut Street car wash next to Davis High School. Students had been released from classes about 15 minutes before the 2:50 p.m. shooting.

The suspects remain in custody while prosecutors consider charging them with two counts of first-degree assault. Police said Thursday that they were still trying to identify two other occupants seen in the suspects' car.

Officers tried to stop the car soon after the shooting in south-central Yakima, prompting the occupants to flee. The brothers were caught near the scene, police said.

The 22-year-old gunshot victim was hit in the torso. His injuries were not life-threatening, police said.
