YAKIMA, Wash. -- One man was injured in a drive-by shooting at a car wash near Davis High School on Wednesday afternoon, just as students were leaving campus.
The victim, 22-year-old Teodoro Lopez, suffered a non-life-threatening wound to his upper right arm and chest, said Yakima police Capt. Greg Copeland.
Lopez is a known gang member from Granger, Copeland added.
Officers arrived after getting calls about an argument outside the Country Cottage car wash that had escalated to a shooting around 2:50 p.m. in the 500 block of West Walnut Street.
The drive-by shooting took place as Davis students were leaving for the day -- which, for police, meant a lot of witnesses.
Officers arrived to find Lopez in the parking lot of the nearby Pikapop Number 16 gas station, 202 S. Fifth Ave. Police said they believe Lopez was taken by friends in a car that was seen circling the area after the shooting, and that he was dropped off at the station.
Witnesses described a white Nissan Altima -- and its license plate number -- with four occupants that had fled the scene, Copeland said.
About 3:10 p.m., a motorcycle cop spotted the Nissan in the 800 block of South 10th Avenue. By then only three people were in the car, which they abandoned to flee on foot, Copeland said.
Police arrested two people -- one man and one juvenile male -- and were still interviewing them late Wednesday.
"We believe we have the one or two that did the actual shooting," Copeland said, adding that witnesses had already identified the suspects.
The Nissan's other two occupants remain at large.
Police do not believe Davis High students were involved.
Officers regularly respond to the vicinity of the school to check on reports of fights or other suspicious activity, but Davis senior Gerardo Valdovinos said this was the first major incident he could recall this year.
"We thought there was a fight or something," he said.
He walked to the gas station and saw a school security officer helping the bleeding victim, who was on the ground by the store's main door.

Yeah, I wound up seeing the paramedics equipment and the victim's shirt ( presumably, I figured they would cut that off to get to the bullet wound ) and thought it was the victim's body laying under a sheet as I drove by. I'm glad that wasn't the outcome.
I couldn't help but notice all the people and kids just standing around looking though. Disturbing.
Teo's older brother Paul Lopez died in a shooting about a year or so ago in the lower valley at a party shooting. He had spent 7 yrs in prison for a robbery. I worked with these kids and knew Teo since he was 15, their whole family is in gangs- its sad. He never had a desire to stop the gang life, he always wanted to be tough. Glad he will survive, but I know he will never stop being in a gang.
Report ViolationJay - insightful comment regarding the probable fact that this kid will never quit the gang. It is the life to many of them, and the only way they will leave it is dead.
Gracious, I hope you didn't meant that it was disturbing that the kids should see such a sight as this kid getting shot. I think it may even be beneficial - as a reminder that they really need to pay attention to their safety in any trouble brewing around them. It will hopefully cause them to get far away the next time they see trouble starting.
With gangers being such lousy shots, and firing into a crowd, it's a wonder that others weren't hurt or killed as well. I have an 18 year old Senior that had to be escorted to her car by police in order to get out of the school's lockdown from the incident, after school. She was mortified that this could happen so close to the school and where she regularly parks her car.
Is the article saying that the car full of Granger gangers was shot at by a Davis Student ganger? Or that a Granger ganger was attending Davis and the others had a beef with him and shot him specifically?
Olympia needs to quit talking and discussing and pass an emergency gang law that has teeth in it for enforcement and prevention, RIGHT NOW!

Too bad he's going to make it. He'll just be another gangster out to retaliate where innocent people are in harms way.
I'm so sick how these young STUPID kids and some adults too, have made Yakima out to be some gangland and seem to be proud of it... ex gang member or not!
Grow up and see what how your glorifying is destroying our community. When it's your child in harms way, maybe you'll think differently about the way things have escalated here with dumb gang comments like the one you made exgangmember.
Ganger-Good word Lol. I have a friend who lived in or around L.Angeles California back in the 80's. He said when the gangs and shootings started (then) it is very similar to how it is starting to pick up around here. Theory- it is only going to get worse. Nothing people can do but look out for themselves.
Report ViolationEspecially with The bad economy, poverty up, quick dollars for drug sales and power in a gang or so it is assumed by youg people, I could see things getting worserererend
Report Violationthis is harsh but just my personal feeling. I wish that if you chose to become a law-snubbing gang member (I am sure there are gang members that have not committed a crime) then it would be nice that "swoosh", you were immediately extradited to a land far far away with just other inhabitants just like yourself. then it would be survival of the fitest. Innocent lives should not have to worry every second of the day when we are out enjoying our community.
I think this magical action should apply to murderers, rapists, robbers, and basically all other forms of hate and lawlessness. People like this used to be run out of town, by the towns people. I won't hesitate to stand up for myself or my family if need be. I don't mind them shooting each other up, I do mind when innocent bystanders are harmed.
Nick in response to your comment, "Is the article saying that the car full of Granger gangers was shot at by a Davis Student ganger? Or that a Granger ganger was attending Davis and the others had a beef with him and shot him specifically?"
Teodoro is from Granger/Toppenish- but I was in Yakima at the time I worked with him. he and his brother always were in Yakima hanging out with their fellow gang members. That was 7-8 yrs ago. From what it sounds like, it was just another blue v red shooting, the city he is originally from makes no difference. His mom lives in the lower valley, but the boys were always hanging out in Yakima.
I want to add, notice the article mentions Teo's "friends" dropped him off at the gas station next to the car wash? First, the hospital is a couple blocks away, 2nd- that's the life you lead as a gangster. They will rat you out, and they will dump your bullet riddled body on the side of the road- just so they don't get in trouble. They could care less about each other- If you get in the gang life for friends and a "family", you are living a lie- these people aren't your friends, they don't have any loyalty. The could care less about you, and your dead body.
Report ViolationIt's unfortunate the shootings have become a common trend in Yakima. I remember growing up and rarely hearing of someone getting killed or shot at. I would walk in the middle of night with my middle school friends to a family member or friends house without worry of getting hurt. Back then there was safety in numbers. Now, a group of friends might be confused for an opposing gang and get shot at. The sad part is that they've taken the two best colors in the rainbow and tried to make them your own so even if you aren't a gang member you can't wear blue or red without risking your life.
Until we, parents, unite to fight this we can't blame anyone but ourselves. We must be able to form a coalition of some sort to say NOT HERE, NOT MY CHILD. There a plenty of parents who just don't care and we are suffering the consequences of their lack of parenting.
You have got to be kidding!
I have been reading the comments page for a number of months. I find the comments to be informational and interesting, sometimes entertaining.
Several times comments are removed by YHR. Now it looks like it is allowing gang members to publish threats to other gangs from other areas through the YHR comment section. Is this not a form of condoning their bad and illegal behavior?
It is time for this entire county to start insisting that something be done. The schools know who are gang members and the gangs they belong too. It’s time for the state laws to mandate public schools to expel the gang members. If there is someone convicted of certain sex crimes they are rightfully so denied the privilege to be on school property. In many cases boundaries of miles are set by the court system. Drug dealing is not allowed in public schools, LOL! If the state where to turn these kids over to their parents, if they have decent parents and make them responsible that would take care of some of it. But then again you have the states “hands off” laws that allow the kids to run the household. They also can not have a job until they are almost adults. If some of the kids could go and earn a little money on a job they might be too tired at night to get into trouble. Then there are those who do not have decent responsible parents to start with.
These gang members are a problem to everyone. They need to be denied service at businesses, stores, restaurants and malls. I have had a conversation with someone in management at the Valley Mall. The response I got back was “if we see them flashing their signs we tell them to stop”. As someone who is not a gang member and over 30, signs, what signs, I don’t know what their signs are. There are many people like myself that will not go to mall any longer. I feel I as a tax paying citizen I have the right to go to a mall and not have to face a group of kids and young adults in group, taking up the entire one half of the mall walkway. This is a type of silent intimidation to the public. I shop primarily on line. For some reason there are a lot of people out there that feel the gangs have the right to be the main contribution to the decline and downfall of Yakima and Yakima County.
Yes, there are a lot of Hispanic gang members, but I have to say the gangs have other races as well. I myself have seen a mother sobbing over her dieing child in a hospital ICU unit. Some of the dieing child’s friends were allowed in to say their last goodbyes. With tears running down their faces they still tried to keep up that gang attitude. I observed 4 different races in this group of gang kids. This was not a Yakima hospital. As sad as it was it was very interesting. The young boy had been shot. The ICU nurses and doctors were doing everything they could, but it wasn’t enough. He died with his mother standing in a pool of his blood on the floor. His “gang banger friends” strutted their gang strut out of the room and down the hall.
Parents don’t think it can never happen to you or your family. It can happen in any family if don’t stay on top of what you kids are doing and who they are hanging out with.
It’s like the lady said a couple of days ago, parents not just Hispanic parents take control of your family and teach your kids right and insist that they do right. Be accountable and make your kids be accountable.
There needs to be a ZERO tolerance to gang members, their kind of dress, and actions.
Gang shooting = AUTOMATIC ATTEMPTED MURDER CHARGE, not assault.
Report ViolationAmen and ditto to LongTimeinYak.
Report ViolationNot event he best prosecutor can get attempted murder without witnesses.. According to the law the best that can be done with JUST the victim's wounds and evidence available is assault. The best protection against prosecution at this type is not snitching. We get them to snitch; we may be on to something.
Report ViolationI bet if every parent pulled their child out of school in retaliation to what's going on and home schooled them or opted for the online classes... the prosecutors would be bringing serious charges against these actions.
Money talks and as a tax payer and parent of a student at Davis High School... I am going down to see what all is entailed to keep my child safe and educated.
IF keeping my child home is my only remedy and the prosecutors office is afraid to charge these criminals with CHILD ENDANGERMENT, then they can figure out another way to pay to keep these public schools open without my child being in attendance AND most importantly... in harms way.
They want to let these bangers run the areas where our children are in large numbers, well, I'm not prepared to lose my child to a stray bullet.
I think everyone has a very valid point here and all feel for the same outcome! I don't enjoy living here anymore because of all of the gang activity and fear for my family's safety. This isn't just involving the gang members they are putting innocent people in the middle when they decide to pull stunts like yesterdays act! I am with "rheitzm" in the fact that ANY gang shooting = ATTEMPTED MURDER! Let's get a grip back on our community people!
Report ViolationLongtimeYak- I saw that post by "xgangmember" and reported it- looks like the moderator took it down shortly after, but you had already posted. They will take down those posts, if we report them. (just may take a bit for them to be notified)
A handful of years ago I was doing a citizen ride along with YPD, and they had call of kids spray painting the underpass near WalMart. The officer caught the kids "red handed" (literally) and they had a receipt for 5 cans of spray paint, from WalMart. They purchased the paint after 11pm- we went to WalMart and spoke to the manager. They did not have a policy against selling this-even to kids who were decked out in all red, obvious gang members. The manager said he would "attempt" to have all cashiers refuse to sell spray paint, but said it would be hard to determine who is and who is not a gang member.
how about this idea. after 11pm and some 15yr olds try to buy paint- say no. Oh, and these weren't all boys, 2 girls and 2 boys, ages 15/16.
In a way, it is too bad that xgangmember's post was removed. I would be interested in what he had to say - and if it was that bad, (Jay's comment) or calling for retaliation, perhaps the police would be interested as well. Perhaps the paper will forward it to them anyway, as many newspapers will do if the comments are of a threatening nature or a possible public safety issue.
Meanwhile, some of these posts are dead-bang on, (no pun intended) and it is good to see some of us, who usually cross swords on some issues, on the same page on this one. We definitely need to take back our community.
I did read xgangmembers post and what I took from it, although it was not very clear, is that gangers from other areas should stay out of ours.
Poor judgement maybe but I don't believe that he was intending threats. Of course, I could be wrong. I just don't think that we always express ourselves correctly.
I still think we should coral all the criminals in an uninhabitated state and have a tournament of the "survival of the fittest".
