EDITOR'S NOTE: In some local races, the Yakima Herald-Republic posed questions to candidates about their positions on key issues in their communities. The following questions were posed to Moxee City Council candidates Maravell Gonsioroski and Dave Hunter.

 

Maravell Gonsioroski

Age: 68

Occupation: Retired cashier. Worked as cashier and manager at Rainier Bank in Moxee for more than 20 years; cashier in the Yakima County Treasurer's Office for 12 years.

Previously held elected office: Moxee City Council, 1992 to present.

Education: Attended Yakima Valley Community College; graduate of Moxee High School.

 

Q. A new intersection on State Route 24 to serve industrial property in the vicinity of Morrier Lane and Duffield Road has been under consideration for years. What, in your opinion, is the best way to move the project forward?

A. The intersection of Morrier and Highway 24 has been in the works for quite a few years. With the economy and grant funds the way things are now, I don't believe this will happen until there are firm commitments for development of this area.

 

Q. The Moxee City Council twice rejected a plan to reclaim usable products from waste tires. Did the council make the right decision?

A. Yes, I believe we as a city council made the right decision to deny the recycling plant.

 

Q. Moxee has expanded its urban growth boundary to Butterfield Road, linking its boundary to the city of Yakima. Where should the city look next for growth, and how could further expansion be funded to provide services?

A. Urban growth has been extended to Birchfield Road (not Butterfield), which eliminates a strip of "no man's land" between Moxee and Yakima Urban Growth Area. Same answer as intersection -- when money for such projects becomes available and there is a need.

 

Q. What skills or past experience would you bring to the job of council member?

A. I am a lifetime resident of Moxee and have worked in public service for 30-plus years. I am also a 30-year 4-H leader and involved in other community activities. I would like to continue being involved in the growth and development of our city.
