Nile Library to remain closed until further notice

NILE, Wash. — The Nile Library will be closed until further notice due to road damage from last week’s massive landslide that buried State Route 410.

The Nile Loop Road, the designated temporary access for local traffic, is too unstable to risk trips with a delivery van that is used to haul books and other materials to the library, located at the community center on Nile Road, Kim Hixson, interim director of Yakima Valley Libraries, announced in a news release this morning.

The library opened for a few hours Saturday once the temporary road opened, but Hixson said she decided to close the branch based on an updated statement on road conditions from the state Department of Transportation. The branch is normally open Tuesdays and Wednesdays, for a total of 20 hours per week.

Library customers may use the Naches and Summitview branches in the meantime to check out and return materials. Staff members will call anyone with pending hold requests to direct them to either branch to pick up their loan items. Late fees will be waived between Oct. 11, the day of the slide, until the Nile branch reopens, Hixson said.

The library has about 180 registered users, who checked out more than 3,300 items last year.
