YAKIMA, Wash. -- The big event in the local retail world last week was the opening of the new Walmart superstore in West Valley, but I've written plenty about that already. So I'm going to give you a Walmart-free Reporter's Notebook this week.

One antique store closes, another opens (with new look)

It didn't take too long after the closure of Today's Yesteryear's Antique Mall to get some new life ...
as another antique store.

But Memories on the Ave., which opened last week at 509 W. Yakima Ave., has a new retro look, complete with walls painted in bright colors and a checkered pattern, and a poodle-skirted mannequin in the window.

Scott Green, the shop's owner, said he decided to open the shop after seeing his wife's interest in shopping for antiques.

Green is focused on getting the antique shop going and is looking for vendors, but once the shop is operating for a while, he plans to work on building a 1950s-style dinner within the shop.

"It's something we're going to do -- it could take three months, six months," he said.

Cramer's to close Yakima store

A few weeks ago, I noticed people holding signs advertising a closing sale at Cramer's Home Furnishings.

Terry Green, manager at the store at 222 S. First St., confirmed that the Ellensburg-based owner was closing the store. Cramer's will continue to operate locations in Ellensburg and Omak.

"(Cramer's is) just closing this location because of a lack of business," he said.

The actual liquidation sale will not start until Wednesday, but the store wanted to begin advertising for it.

The sale is expected to last until Dec. 13, when Cramer's plans on closing the store for good.

Name change is for real this time

The folks at Mike Olson Dodge recently announced they were selected as the official dealer for all brands of Chrysler LLC, and the business now goes by the name Mike Olson Chrysler, Jeep and Dodge.

You might remember that in July, the dealership had some radio ads under the new name.

When we asked if the dealership was selling new cars from the other Chrysler brands, details were few. We later learned that the silence might be attributed to the fact that there were several bills in Washington on the table designed for Chrysler LLC to reinstate franchise agreements it ended with 789 dealerships, including ones with Lee Peterson Motors and Hahn Motor Co.

The legislation has pretty much fallen flat despite legislators' efforts to move the bills forward, especially as the Obama administration has maintained that terminating the agreements was necessary for Chrysler to emerge from bankruptcy.
