Real estate workshop due for Latino farmers

Yakima Herald-Republic

YAKIMA, Wash. -- Sales agreements, financing options and market statistics are among the topics to be covered at an education workshop for Latino farmers Thursday.

The two-hour meeting starts at 6 p.m. at the Rural Community Development Resources Small Business Incubator, 24 S. Third Ave.

The workshop, in partnership with the federal Farm Service Agency, is designed to help Latino farmers and ranchers understand the farm real estate process.

The RCDR Center for Latino Farmers is working with the U.S. Department of Agriculture to increase participation in USDA programs. One opportunity is a new farm bill that provides additional funding for low-interest loans. The maximum loan amount is $300,000.

The seminar will be conducted in Spanish by a real estate agent and an FSA loan officer. Space is limited. To register, call 509-453-3157.

How come I can't get a low interest loan to start a farm? and I can even do it in English. Of course, I would need to learn Spanish to even be able to hire anybody anymore.

What is up with all the programs for non-citizens in this country, when we, who pay the tab for these with our taxes, are left in the dust. Isn't this kind of thing discriminatory? It surely would be if it were held for English-speaking American citizens only.

Another Federal double standard. I thought the the goal of "diversity", (it should really be practiced and called "Unity") was to include EVERYBODY.

This is the definition of a racist program in that it singles out people to benefit based solely on their ethnic background. What is right about that?

"is designed to help Latino farmers and ranchers understand the farm real estate process." The program is available to all farmers, white or latino. The meeting will just be held in spanish. I dont know where you get illegal out of this. Latino farmers are not illegals. I would stand behind any white person looking for a job in the orchards.

OMG, you missed the point of the story and of my comment. I did NOT say anything about the program being offered to illegals, did I? All I did was ask questions regarding the equality of the program, which is Not about offering me, since I am not Latino, a discount on my financing for a farm, should I want to start one. It is available only to Latinos. I would think that the bully ACLU would be all over this, but they really don't watch out for the rights of anyone but minorities and criminals in any case anyway. Reverse discrimination is rampant nowadays and few have the guts to call it out into the open for what it is - just another form of racism and discrimination against an ethnicity. Since I am retired and not holding public office, I can be free to say anything I want without fear of retribution - so I say it.

Chris - been out of town - sorry about that. I'm glad you missed me.

When was there a work shop held for the rest of us farmers and ranchers, (cowboys, farmers, etc) who want to purchase a ranch or farm? Is this the same program that was announced earlier this year for Latinos to purchase homes? Also, what real estate agent or broker is going to be putting on this work shop? Are you going to just give these potential clients only geared towards one agent or agency? I would think that the Latino community are smart enough to know how to purchase a farm or ranch, and don't need hand holding in Spanish to buy real estate.

I think there should be a work shop held for anyone who wants to purchase a home, there are ethics and guide lines that need to be addressed such as interviewing a real estate broker or mortgage broker to ensure you are not being forced into a home that doesn't fit your needs or a loan that you cannot afford. There are many agents and brokers still out there that will weasel folks into a living situation that they simply cannot afford, which is why this market got into the real estate mess we are all currently suffering from.

Good points Dry - exactly why I said what I said. All the "favors" seem to go to others, but not us. Seems that if you are Caucasian and a citizen to boot, there are no special deals, but all are reserved for minorities and criminals, again thanks to the ACLU and liberal apologist, guilt-ridden PC.

Furthermore, if we complain about the inequality, we are racists, bigots, and hate mongers. So be it I guess. Add those to the list of labels, (by the label-conscious left-wingers and media) which now, in my case, includes that I have qualified to be a "domestic terrorist" according to Homeland INsecurity chief, Napolitano.

I used to be down on all the special things for Hispanics until I started reading some of these Redneck comments. Don't get me wrong, I like Renecks, especially Texans, but some of these comments make me feel very protective of these people. Yesterday I walked by a group of young migrant males and they were trying to read their mail and I felt like saying "Hurry, take protective cover in your house, there are some very hateful people in Yakima." They were real innocent looking and seemed like they had put in a hard day of work. They had those big brown eyes with super long and thick eye lashes and they looked like children. And they are up here trusting us entirely and after reading some of this here I just hope they don't trust all of us.

Admit it, we're some kind of special experiamental community and we would be practically a ghost town without them. Half of all rentals would be empty causing home values to drop and city tax revenues to take a big time dive. The list of depressing things that would happen are endless.

So very true...like it or not they pay taxes..city taxes state taxes and federal taxes. They do not whine and complain about paying them either. They work hard for their money doing jobs nobody else wants. I have seen them in the fields in the extreme heat, in the cold, digging ditches, weeding feilds they do the grunt work so we can hang out in our air conditioned offices getting fat and lazy. They turn their cheeks whenever we talk trash about them. They forgive us for our ignorance and rudeness.

The following information is for all the negative people with their negative comments about the hispanic community;
USDA/ federal agencies have programs and services for everyone that wants to apply and get financial assistance for agricultural businesses, and others. You do not have to speak or learn spanish in order for you to communicate with the english speaking federal agent. Now, you must to be a LEGAL RESIDENT or CITIZEN before you get consider for any of the services, therefore all these latino people pay TAXES like everyone else. By the way, the financial assistance is not FREE, they do pay an INTEREST RATE for the loans they have acquired. Now, if there are grants available, it is open for EVERYONE that is interested to apply, therefore you all should KEEP UP with the news by reading newspapers or exploring the federal web site.
If you want workshops in English for 2 or more people for free, you could get intouch with the federal agencies and request it for free, they would work with you and your schedule. I believe in the freedom of speech and our government, but by having IGNORANT people who points fingers to others without getting the proper facts or information makes me wonder if you need for help than the minority people
