YAKIMA, Wash. -- A small pipe bomb exploded when a military team tried to render it safe on Thursday, city police said.
Police were called to the area of North 20th and Englewood avenues about 10:20 a.m. when someone reported finding a suspicious device
on the shoulder of the road.
Police said the device appeared to be a pipe bomb, and a bomb unit from the Army's Yakima Training Center responded.
A small business complex at the southwest corner of 20th and Englewood was evacuated as a precaution.
Police were investigating but had not identified any possible suspects or determined why the device had been left.
