Accordion concert is a double treat

Yes, let's get this out of the way up front: There will be polkas.

But there will be a lot more than just polkas when acclaimed accordionist Johnny Vukonich of Cashmere, Wash., joins local accordion maestro Gary Malner for a performance Saturday at the Harman Center, 101 N. 65th Ave. in Yakima.

Vukonich, who goes by Johnny V when performing, is proficient in styles as disparate as rock and big band. Malner, a Union Gap resident, has been playing since 1950 and likewise is well-versed in several musical styles.

"Obviously people see our accordions and they think polkas," Malner said. "But we're not going to concentrate on it. That's simply going to be a part of it."

They'll also play big band, swing, '50s music, Latin music, easy listening, waltz, two-step and fox-trot music. The evening will begin with a half-hour concert from each player and continue with a two-hour dance.

"The concerts will be filled with a variety of original compositions," Malner said.

He met Vukonich several years ago at an accordion competition in Leavenworth, Wash., and has played with him on several occasions since.

"We probably will be doing a lot more together after people hear this," Malner said.

Tickets cost $12.50 and seating is limited. For more information, call Malner at 509-952-3913.
