YAKIMA, Wash. -- The 10-year-old Yakima girl injured while she was crossing the street on her way to school remained in critical condition Tuesday afternoon at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, according to a nursing supervisor at the hospital.

Veronica Gonzalez was hit Monday morning when she was struck by a pickup driven by a retired Washington State Patrol sergeant. Yakima police say the driver, 65-year-old David Gotzh, did not see a red light as he drove east on Washington Avenue, facing the glare of the morning sun.

Gonzalez, who was on her way to McClure Elementary School with her two sisters, was walking across Washington at the intersection with Cornell Avenue when she was hit in the crosswalk by Gotzh's 2002 Ford Ranger pickup.

Witnesses told police the eastbound traffic light had turned red and Gonzalez had a northbound walk signal at the time of the accident, according to a Yakima Police Department news release.

Police are continuing to investigate the accident.
