KLICKITAT, Wash. -- Klickitat Elementary and High School was one of four schools statewide to be named one of this year's No Child Left Behind-Blue Ribbon Schools.
U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan announced the award this week. Nationwide, 314 schools received the recognition.
The other schools in Washington to receive the honor were Colbert Elementary School in the Mead School District, Columbia High and Elementary School in the Columbia School District, and Naselle Junior Senior High School in the Naselle-Grays River Valley School District.
"These schools stand out as leaders in both achievement and improvement," State Superintendent of Public Instruction Randy Dorn said in a news release. "I am very proud of the teachers, staff, students and parents in these buildings. Their enthusiasm, hard work and creativity demonstrate that we can both close the achievement gap and maintain high standards."
The No Child Left Behind-Blue Ribbon Schools award acknow-ledges academically superior schools as well as schools that demonstrate dramatic hikes in student achievement. In all, 413 schools can be nominated nationally. The total is determined by the number of schools and the student population in each state.
Public schools are nominated by each state's chief school administrator; private schools are nominated by the Council for American Private Education.
This year's winners will be honored Nov. 3 at a ceremony in Washington, D.C.
