Any time an event is officially sanctioned by the International Gravity Sports Association -- yes, that's a real thing -- you can bet it's going to be exciting.

But the Maryhill Festival of Speed, which includes downhill skateboard, street luge and inline skating competitions, is just plain crazy. Street luge, for the uninitiated, is basically when you strap yourself to a board with wheels just inches off the pavement and hurtle downhill as fast as possible.

The event, set from Wednesday through Sept. 6 on historic Maryhill Loops Road off of Washington Scenic Route 14 east of U.S. Highway 97 near Goldendale, will feature about 200 of the world's top gravity-sports athletes.

They'll battle for $6,000 in prize money, but for most of these competitors the rush is prize enough. The course promises "sweeping hairpin turns, fast straight-aways and flawless pavement," to allow competitors to reach harrowing speeds.

There's a "festival style" atmosphere for spectators featuring live music, athlete parties and free pancake breakfasts.
