SELAH, Wash. -- Motorists experienced delays up to four hours traveling near Selah on Friday, when a semitrailer hauling hay rolled over in the Interstate 82 construction zone.
Gregory Revis, 36, of Orting, Wash., was driving westbound when he failed to negotiate a construction detour, according to the Washington State Patrol. The semitrailer rolled over about 9:30 a.m. at the crossover junction between State Route 823 and the west end of Interstate 82.
The crossover road was built to accommodate the bridge repair.
The westbound lanes were blocked until 1:20 p.m. while the trailer and its load were removed. Congestion continued after the reopening, though, with the backup reportedly stretching four miles and cars stalling for more than 30 minutes, officials said.
Revis was not injured in the accident, and he was charged with speeding and negligent driving, authorities said.
Friday's blockage was the first major incident since the project started last week. Officials had warned that motorists should use extra caution while traveling through the work zone.
The crossover road has bumpy areas at both ends and the lanes are narrower than usual.
